This part is glossed over, but kind of telling. Not learning the language or trying to assimilate is a choice, and obviously has its disadvantages. When you make your partner compensate for a lot of those, then it's pretty hard to sympathise, especially when you add children into the mix.

I started learning React recently. I really like the way the code is laid out and I enjoy writing it so far, but trying to use jQuery animations with React seems to pretty much ruin that neatness and readability.

I did try the experimental CSSTransitionGroup, but it has some serious bugs, and didn't seem designed for in-place transitions. It's hard to find a good number of examples at this point though.

I came across the React Tween State GitHub page while googling, so I'll have to try it out. If I can get comfortable with basic animations with React, I think I'll be using it a lot more.

I hope developers make good use of the changes to the title bar. It completely breaks the flow of the design of a lot of apps, and kills precious vertical space on my 13-inch MBP. A keyboard shortcut to toggle the menu bar would've been nice too. Neither of those would be big issues if it weren't for the slow, eye-melting, completely superfluous fullscreen animations though.

It's borderline if you live by yourself in the city, especially if they don't cover travel expenses. There's a chance your health insurance and pension will be deducted from that too, assuming they cover it.

If you're working for a Japanese company, you'll probably be working a lot more hours, and taking a lot less holidays than you would be in the US or UK. 4x is a low estimate for the actual amount of work you'll be doing.

I think this book is a little too basic for anyone who's already studied any OOP. I'm no expert, but what I learnt from this could've been condensed into a blog post. I think it'd make a great introduction (a word that should be included in the title) to OOP though.

Do you know of any resources or examples that demonstrate basic animation techniques like this? The canvas examples I've found so far seem to be for fluid animations or games, rather than interactive scenes or visualisations that can be stopped or stepped through.

I've used Anki for years to learn Japanese. It made learning to read relatively painless. You do need discipline to get far with it though. I managed to get my vocab deck up over 10,000 words, but leaving it for even a week is difficult.

As far as language learning goes, you also need to realise that no amount of SRS'd words is going to make you a natural, fluent speaker, so don't fall into the trap of spending all your study time reviewing.

I've found this to be a bit of a nightmare with Japanese and English. Japanese DVD and CD titles often have a mix of both languages, so length becomes next to meaningless when comparing Japanese strings even against themselves. The feel of the text is also completely different, which makes it hard to balance the layout for both languages.

I'm already signed up to this. I'm hoping it'll go beyond what I picked up messing around with Capistrano and AWS. I've enjoyed other courses on the edX platform.

My problem is that there don't seem to be any resources available for learning sysadmin with web development and VPSs specifically in mind. After getting through a book on Unix sysadmin, I learnt about more than I need without really feeling confident about the topics that are relevant to hosting a webapp securely/reliably.

I'm not a big fan of infinite scrolling, and when it breaks standard desktop functionality like CMD + Up Arrow, as in the case of Google image search, I could really do without it.

Fair point. Replace lettuce with nuts, sweet potatoes, milk, lentils etc. None of them in any quantity are a logical extension of refined sugar.
