I often run the server and the media player app on the same system. When the server analyzes a new movie, the spinning circle animation in the corner of the player app uses more CPU than the server’s transcoding and analysis processes.

Weird how there is still no real successor for the Voyage. They somehow refuse to release a 6-inch device with warm light and a light sensor for auto brightness. And with the lack of immersion reading on e-ink devices, I don't think I want to buy another Kindle again.

Passkeys, SSH keys, Fastmail's masked email integration.

Did I get myself into vendor lock-in, or are these items covered by those password manager exports?

Last time I compared them, it was actually ChatGPT that provided a similarly good search experience, especially compared to Claude. OpenAI doesn't meter its regular chat experience by token usage (yet), so I don't have to ration the better model and just leave it on Thinking High. The end result has definitely been better than what I got from the same queries in Claude or Gemini, and I suspect this isn't just about differences between the models, but also about the way search is integrated into their end-user chat apps.

This is honestly also one of the reasons why I don't subscribe to Kagi anymore. My 'Google-Fu', combined with whatever personalization is happening on my account, already keeps Google's search results in a similarly useful state to Kagi's, so Google and ChatGPT already cover my needs.

Paying for Kagi Ultimate feels like a privacy upgrade but a quality sidegrade that isn't worth $270 a year.

I like the Readwise integration via plugin and the EPUB support, but for the first few days with it, I was busy understanding the menu hierarchy and trying to figure out how to match the styling and spacing of my native Kindle books. The out-of-the-box experience is unfortunately just "tasteless," and I needed some time to warm up to it.

I once didn't understand the task given in an exercise sheet for a CS logic lecture, so I googled the topic, and all Google did was send me back to that exact exercise sheet.

Compared to Claude and Gemini, I think ChatGPT is really more thorough when it comes to web searches and providing sources. The others usually answer in a short paragraph and give me maybe one or two sources, while ChatGPT thinks for a minute and presents me a little mini report with 10-20 sources to look further into. This is honestly the reason why I stopped paying for Kagi, but I'm not sure how worse this will get when ads become commonplace in ChatGPT.

Is it really that bad? I always get the impression that their blog posts look especially beautiful with their font choices and overall design. They are typographically pleasing, and if I could, I would use this as the distraction-free reading mode for every web page.

It feels like I’m reading a newspaper, but oddly, without them resorting to any skeuomorphic tricks.

It looks like consoles and PCs have settled on somewhat different gaming configurations. Consoles usually try to target a fixed output frame rate, while the resolution is often dynamic. On PCs, by contrast, the resolution stays static, while the frame rate and frame-time pacing are dynamic. How does this fit into the latency discussion?

Especially in competitive gaming, I often see people targeting frame rates way beyond their display’s refresh rate. I’m not sure whether this actually provides a real benefit or whether they’re chasing a placebo effect.

Am I out of touch, or is it the children with colored LEDs on their DRAM sticks who are wrong?

Weirdly, the decision to use PHP was justified back then by the easy deployment of the tarball on some shared webhoster. Open yourwebsite.com/owncloud, enter your database credentials, and you already have your instance running.

Now that use case is gone, everyone is expected to use their big Docker image, but the server is still written in PHP. I can't shake the feeling that some people just don't want to give up the tools they are used to and have stuck with them for a bit too long.

Would it make sense to add a prefix to all commands to avoid conflicts with built-in commands? Like how, on macOS and FreeBSD, installing GNU Coreutils adds a `g` prefix, Microsoft could add an `m` prefix to these commands.

I am wary of those ARM-based Windows machines because I am unsure how good the ongoing driver support for those SoCs will be. Will they even outlive the Windows version they currently ship with?

Looking at devices like the NVIDIA Shield gives me some hope that NVIDIA will be better than Qualcomm here. I just hope this is not a case where the OEM has to purchase X years of driver support from the chip vendor beforehand, and that NVIDIA will provide support directly itself.

Google recently increased storage from 2 TB to 5 TB on their $20 AI plan, while Dropbox is still stuck at 2 or 3 TB for their $12/$20 plans.

They moved from 1 TB to 2 TB in mid-2019, and I wonder if they ever plan to pass on any of the gains from the past seven years of technological advancements, or if those gains are simply being captured on their side while we keep paying the same.

I opened a new ticket over three weeks ago to ask about the status of the refund, and that has been left untouched as well.

Now I have submitted a reclamation request to my bank and am waiting for a response.
