This!

An economist might counter that any such business would loose market share. But, in actuality, a lot busineses are not competing for survival or even for market share but have it due to entrenchment. examples include: ISPs, healthcare, etc

this is the sadest assertion i've ever seen. if sucking the life out of people is the only way people can remain civilized then we are truely lost.

I find it hard to believe the author could not figure out personal finance. He's certainly smart enough with that economics degree and those epic writing skills.

If we're just looking at how to improve the individual: The issue is lack of self discipline. as he said, it's just too easy to spend. The solution: more social security, in effect a forced retirement plan. Instead of 7.5%, make it 10% or even 15%, 20%, whatever it takes. that takes self discipline out of the equation and fixes the imbalance between spending and saving.

If we're looking at society, then there's a lot of ways to bring the cost of living down. the cost structure of an individuals spending is mostly on housing. Unfortunately, right now your only choices in the developed world are: an extremely fancy luxurious living arrangement (most condos, apartments, houses, etc) far beyond your means or an illegal tent under the highway. But, looka tthe hazda tribes: they show you don't need millions of dollars for shelter. they don't even have modern tools. they build their own shelter by hand every night with a few hours of work, with NO money or retirement savings whatsoever - what can we learn from this? sure we may not build the exact same structure but there's a lot to learn from this conceptually. There's a world of innovation waiting to happen between those luxury condos and a handwoven 3 hours makeshift tent - unfortunately right now, it's all very much Illegal.

i remember seeing the stats presented on moonshots podcast about 3 months ago. they said every quarter, the percentage of CS fresh grads decreased their placement roughly 10% or so and it was down to about 19% at last count and entry level salaries down from 96K to 61k, if i recall.

you can cheaper ones. i'm shopping for them on discount tires.com and there;'s some for like 100$ per tire.

Look for low rolling resistance. chat gpt helps with this a lot

Wells Fargo went so far as to remove their best feature from their website: the Spending breakdown page! they now say go to the app but the app is far worse than the browser version was before they removed it. i might even stop using them just for this mess.

what's missing from this article, they briefly mention it, is the type of protein. that matters. the amino acid profile of the protein really matters. the most important one of course (according to several books i read on the matter (Dr Greger's series on how not to, etc), says it's all about the Methionine!

i did some research: here's the methionine content per gram of protein per food category: the highest ones were any kind of animal based protein are typically 30+ mg per gram of protein. whole grains, and nuts typically 15mg to 30mg or so. Beans, Veg and fruit have the lowest about 12 to 15mg per gram of protein.

sure you could just eat less protein and that's fine but the type of protein your eating also matters

all the parody jokes aside, I still think hacker news commenting is so much more informative and solution oriented than reddit.

universal health care can be offered even in 3rd world countries but they're really smart about keeping costs low. they drastically cut the costs of medical service by just offering one or two generic drugs bbought in bulk from china and india rather than all those custom expensive drugs that do the same thing. it does the same thing but at a much lower cost

the AI bros would counterargue and say that with all the increased productivity, it will just open up more opportunities and thus more jobs. But, i don't think we're seeing that. Net jobs seems to be going down.

at the scale that google is at, it doesn't make an ounce of sense to hold a company liable for a potential mistruth. what if there's a 1/1000 chance of some error, then the company could be sued millions of times per day.

down vote all you want, but I firmly believe this is an example where the user needs to use some judgement on the information they receive and have some critical thinking skills. google would be right to remove all AI results from germany.

yeah, staggering. it's utterly amazing how much people care about gas prices. i can't wrap my mind around it. I mean, would people really rather be out on the street rather than get an EV or god forbid a hybrid?

shelter isn't just a cherry picked item. It's by an far the largest spending category, that and healthcare. I couldn't care less about all the other categories, personally.
