> Why does it matter?

You asserted further up that "Android uses Linux but it has no consequences for users or developers."

That simply isn't true.

Iridium didn't make it? I use it all the time.

@seba_dos1 Whom do those reasons serve, specifically?

The Open Source knife cuts both ways, I'm afraid. You Purism crusaders sure are selective in its application.

You've moved the goalposts from "Android isn't Linux" to "Android uses Linux but it has no consequences for users or developers."

I look forward to "Linux users and/or developers benefit from Android but..."

Sure, but on many, you can, which supports their point.

Painting Apple and Android devices with the same brush in this particular regard doesn't make a lot of sense.

> If what you care about is protecting device and application providers' interests from their users, then I guess it does.

That clearly isn't what they care about, or intended with their comment. Please respond to the strongest plausible interpretation of what someone says, not a weaker one that's easier to criticize.

How does citing your own prior comment, one which itself offered no justification for its claim, add value of any kind to your response?

"I am become, Source? I Made It Up, destroyer of discourse."

The global horse population peaked in the 1910s.

Even when the Steam Deck was $319, far more people still bought Switches, of course.

Doesn't matter. Check out Proton's current stats, and see the Deck's impact on everyone who didn't buy one: https://www.protondb.com

Anyone who cares about Windows->Linux compatibility layers, x86 emulation on ARM, or VR will benefit greatly from the Steam Deck/Machine/Frame ecosystem, due largely to Valve's reported 100+ developers they have making open source contributions in applicable areas.

From SteamVR to Mesa to Proton to SteamOS to FEX, Valve's easily one of the most important Linux contributors these days.

Some argue gridlock is a feature, not a bug. I'm of two minds about it, but I understand the appeal.

I would also add that, at least in my experience, those who are professionally ambitious and maximizing professional success, while being highly confident they are also succeeding at home, often have an inaccurate view of their home life. It's not until the kids are grown and openly fighting their demons that they realize the bargain that they made.

It's that old adage of, anyone who thinks they're a great parent, probably isn't. And almost all kids would be happier with a less wealthy (or even poorer) upbringing, and a tighter family.

The number of wives who have complained to me privately about the lack of family commitment of rock star husbands whom everyone admires (often precisely for their apparent family commitment) was a real eye-opener.

I'm not convinced that stratospheric success in business is very often compatible with high levels of parental and spousal involvement. It is sometimes, but those are anomalies we shouldn't build our fairy tales around. I know very few old-timers who wish they'd spent less time with their families when they could have made the difference of a lifetime.
