People don’t know that the heyday of STEM governance was the Soviet Union.

This. It seems most developers have never even had the experience of iterating on a system they understand, making predictions, seeing the result, and having a clear sense of what they are trying to accomplish. There are so many tools and systems, wrangling them becomes an end in itself.

Why are you trying to convince me?

Sour grapes is when you assume that a privilege another person has must actually be bad. In this case the temptation is to say you could have been successful in big tech but you are too moral. (Other people must be making moral compromises).

> only highest volume sellers can remain.

Ridiculous simplification.

Well, remind me not to hire you for an executive media position.

This is also the default C behavior.

Nothing they could have done? That’s crazy.

Before video this happened to text. Look at for example how NYT has shored itself up vs the many failed news outlets. Premium brand.

How does internet censorship 2016-2024 fit into your model?

It’s more simple than that. Industry tends to align with government because they have power and they want that power to be benefit them. If you’re a large company it would be stupid not to try to maintain that relationship.

I do agree. A government funded benefit is an explicit tax and spend. A mandate to provide a benefit is a hidden tax where it's not clear who is paying.

I'm baffled. Do you not see the normative vs descriptive claim here?

The reality is that requiring benefits imposes a cost, and employers manage that cost by limiting who qualifies. So yes, this hurt many workers - and disproportionately impacted disadvantaged people who didn't make the full-time cliff.

Ignoring increntives is actually shaking your fist at the sky.

You're missing the point of the comment. It was not about affordability.

Sour grapes.

> sit through endless woke sexual harassment videos where you are taught that the white man is the source of all evil,

In big tech I had fewer trainings than any other org in my career, because they knew time was money.

It's always better to have more credentials, more prestige, and be more attractive. Does that stop the other 80% of hires? No.
