Michael Lewis wrote a book called Flashboys all about it. If your network speed and processing power are faster than the competitors, then you can move faster than them on any trade. Really interesting stuff

I think something like yoga or dance would qualify.

If you’re exclusively looking for things where you can put your hands on stuff then maybe a petting zoo?

How do y’all avoid lawsuits and stuff? I always wonder that about Palantir and Anduril and all those other companies. Did you have to ask permission? Or is this just a run it til there’s a lawsuit because you’re in a different industry thing?

This doesn't actually map methane leaks. It finds oilfield equipment and infrastructure and guesses how much it might leak and how that leak might diffuse. There's not like a special sensor to see methane from the satellite like I had originally guessed

"Maguire said the same AI technology that Google used to detect trees, crosswalks, and intersections from satellite imagery would be applied to oil and gas infrastructure. The map would be overlaid with data from MethaneSAT to shed light on the type of machinery most susceptible to leaks."

If you’re interested in a deeper dive, this is basically a summary of Peter Attia’s Outlive

https://peterattiamd.com/outlive/

It’s a good book, I’m currently reading it now. The premise is: if you want your later years to be healthier (as thoroughly defined in the book, but covering physical and emotional wellness), you need to start early with a long term plan

So far so good, I’m enjoying it

The INSANE thing to me about naming your company Palantir after the artifact from Middle Earth is the story behind the seeing stones.

By the Third Age - when the events of the Lord of the Rings take place - several of the Palantiri (plural) are lost. The danger of using the stones was twofold: 1) not all the stones were accounted for, you couldn’t know who was listening in and 2) Sauron had one of the stones.

A dark lord who wanted to rule the world in fire and ash and darkness had this surveillance tool and used it to corrupt the other known users of the seeing stones, Denethor and Sauroman. That was the plot structure of these stones. Aragon and Merry/Pippin were able to use them against Sauron, who thought the hobbits with Aragorn might be Frodo. But again, to me this shows the danger of making decisions based on spying technology. Sauron committed his forces against Gondor because his intel told him and it led to his eye being distracted from Frodo/Sam/Gollum sneaking over the mountains and into Mt. Doom.

Why you would name your surveillance company after that is beyond me. To me it would be like getting aboard a plane run by Icarus airlines or naming the next big boat/plane/rocketship Titanic.

I think it’s the Moneyball strategy - teams prefer home runs to base hits even if it means more strikeouts

Now baseball is shifting away from moneyball back to base hitters because they made their product super boring and stale. I think enshittification is a similar process in Silicon Valley, which might cause investors to have to look at more “base hitters” and not count on unicorn home runs

is anyone else weirded out that it simulates breath? like this is a robot, not a real woman, but it pauses to take a breath to mimic human sound.

on the one hand i like it. she sounds like a real podcast host and person with a nice, professional voice.

on the other hand it's weird. like why does it need to do that other than to pretend to be a person.
