The Usenet vibes, "let's talk about the stuff we geeks love before people come to spoil them". A much higher quality than average chat room, even if imperfect and undoubtedly biased to our left brain personas.
So searching on HN is a bit of the "Search for the small web".
Call it free, available, downloadable etc, but not "Open".
Either way, Mistral is a failing company with little relevance in the AI space and that's not going to save them.
Today they are vibe coders and no longer need stack overflow.
They created the AI ghetto with their forced disclosure banner but are doing nothing about AI otherwise. They must do better than to basically tell developers that AI cloning is their problem. How about using a bill or two from their huge pile of cash to build a coherent strategy to handle the post-AI game industry?
They were always a bit resentful about how I made money "so easily". And they were right in a sense. Before retiring I'd make more money browsing reddit in a boring meeting than they would make in a day.
We made incredible improvements to society but we also destroyed the livelihoods of millions. I believe our profession was/is a massive net positive to the world, but many got hurt while we steamrolled others without hesitation.
I'm actually very positive about AI in general and I don't think it will end our field. But if that's what happens, we can lament the bad luck but not really complain that we've been wronged.
I think some people are brute forcing it through a lot of agent time and expense, but they used 6.1 Sol Medium, a great but not a top capability AI model+effort.
This matches what I've been hearing regarding talent and experience making a big difference in task speed and cost when using AI. When prices stop being subsidized, this will be a key factor when evaluating engineer performance: "you've used a lot of tokens and don't have much to show for!"
Who knows where this is going to end, but Talent+AI still beats Vibe work by a lot.
I was programming already in the mid 80s and helping my dad figure out 20MB "Winchesters" in the late 80s/early 90s.
