What are those consequences?

> And then came the greedy grifters. They invested money not just to get returns (they could've gotten returns on any other established field of business), but to gamble for a chance of crazy high returns. They thought software has near-zero marginal cost. They started building walled gardens, to extract rent from users. Build insane profits on that near-zero initial cost.

It looks like you are talking about enshittification: https://pluralistic.net/2024/08/17/hack-the-planet/. There are strong NGOs fighting for the user rights like https://eff.org and https://edri.org.

Why is this downvoted? OP is simply suggesting to give up, ignoring many intermediate victories in the war for privacy. Consider supporting https://www.eff.org/issues/privacy instead.

Please stop with the security/privacy nihilism, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27897975.

What do you mean? These are desktop operating systems for end users.

Isn't it just the consequence of enshittification? https://pluralistic.net/2024/08/17/hack-the-planet/

It does not affect Debian, Fedora, or Qubes OS.

> from "Android isn't Linux" to "Android uses Linux but it has no consequences for users or developers."

What does "Android is Linux" mean to you? It uses Linux? Why does it matter?

I don't see how any of these items prove your point.

> Cars being the most obvious on the list of downsides. The massive environmental cost

Newer cars require far less resources for construction and operation.

> the fact that 2% of the land area of the US is paved so that cars could work

Harmful governmental policies forcing people to use cars everywhere have nothing to do with the fact that progress makes cars more efficient.

So what are you suggesting? Giving up? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50229490
