He got into a technical spat with Lord Kelvin and it didn’t go well for him.

From the context: a Fellow rather than a Master.

While the technology itself may be great (I don't really know since I don't use them) it has been co-opted by the tech conglomerates as another form of isolating and walling off users into their ecosystems.

And honestly, nowadays, if tech companies are pushing really hard for something then that is an immediate red flag for me and it bears more scrutiny. One of those "if you see them running that way you run the opposite way".

They mostly just massacre their own.

This is what Terence Tao said of Buckmaster’s and Alpolge approach:

“There does not seem to be anything in principle preventing the methods from extending all the way to Navier-Stokes, and there is even a non-negligible chance that the forcing term could be eliminated entirely, although there are an enormous number of technical difficulties that would ensue in implementing that program. At this point, I would not be surprised if one could batter out such an extension by pouring an enormous amount of compute and AI assistance at such a task…”

Pouring infinite AI resources into it is exactly what OpenAI did.

This quote from Tao is prescient:

“ There does not seem to be anything in principle preventing the methods from extending all the way to Navier-Stokes, and there is even a non-negligible chance that the forcing term could be eliminated entirely, although there are an enormous number of technical difficulties that would ensue in implementing that program. This will mostly self-correct. Nature really doesn’t give a fuck about ideology.

Just vaccinate yourself and your kids and listen to the advice of real doctors.

But will “business as usual, but with AI” justify the current capital expenditures? I think the market is pricing things as being closer to “AI cornucopia”.

What happens if/when we don’t deliver?

You are horrified it needs access to its own stuff? I mean, any software that supports plugins needs access to them, no? How is that unreasonable? And with bwrap that’s an extra cli option.

I highly recommend reading A Thread Across the Ocean, a gripping tale of the development and laying of the first transatlantic cable. It’s quite a page turner.

Most of that money is wasted on keeping the military industrial complex fat and happy, it's not going into soldier's pockets. And I say this being pro-US and indeed seeing the world as a dangerous place.

But let's not make some bullshit up about a million dollars wasted on some non-sense, when we have real problems with the DoW, which can't even audit itself, sucking up almost a trillion dollars.

You made a tiny mistake, you forgot the $800 billion for the military!

Anyone who has ever seen or handled a simple 1U server knows this is absolute bullshit. And laundry bags have to be absolutely the worst possible way to transport something like this.

And they stole 80 of them? So basically a truckload? Sure.

I think non-software creative work has indeed been completely decimated by AI usage, particularly on the small business end. But this has been going on for a while now, I think since the image generation models got good enough to write down text with hallucinating nordic runes.
