To me that sounds like anarchism, or maybe anarcho-capitalism. What makes fascism different from those ideologies?

Isn't fascism an authoritarian ideology? How can someone be authoritarian and anti-government at the same time?

Why do you think right wing extremism starts via youtube?

What word would you prefer I use instead of "excuse"?

It's the natural consequence of a few companies having all of the compute resources. They can do whatever they want since the alternative for users is to pay out the nose for hardware to run a model that isn't SOTA.

>I understand that many people do self-custody for philosophical reasons

I interpreted this to mean you don't think there are practical reasons to use self-custody, which is why I shared multiple practical reasons to use it over an exchange. Security risk is only a portion of the risk you are exposed to by using an exchange. If you are only concerned with security risks, then maybe exchanges are preferable.

As for hardware ledgers, I'm not convinced that buying special-purpose hardware is preferable to using general-purpose hardware + software for this. I don't keep all my money in crypto though, so maybe I'm just uninformed.

Not gp, but I think the point was that no one would defend those mistakes. The post gp is replying to is someone trying to excuse Anthropic for such a mistake. The expectation is that people should ask for consequences, not make excuses on behalf of the company.

Self custody doesn't require using a hardware ledger, and such gadgets represent a very small minority of self-custody wallets. In addition, there are noteworthy non-security risks when using an exchange. There's fraud, illiquidity, new legislation, asset forfeiture, and innumerable other reasons why an exchange might prevent you from withdrawing your funds. I think it's naive to suggest that self-custody is just a novelty with no value.

How do you grow trees on a roof without roots destroying the roof?

I think this is almost at the truth. My view is that everyone values two frequently opposing things: truth and social reward. Whether you behave like (1) or (2) depends on which you value more, and how much pressure is being applied from either direction. I like to think that most people usually value being correct over social reward but this is not always the case, and frequently this difference in values results in totally unproductive arguments. There is no persuading someone who defends a position for social reward. The best thing you can do is try to make their position seem absurd and silly as a social punishment, and hopefully witnesses will think agreeing with you will result in higher social reward. I believe this is also why high profile debates are frequently just two people slinging insults back and forth. This is actually what a significant number of people find persuasive, since it determines whether their social circle will reward them or punish them for their beliefs.

Unfortunately this is true, border crossings are a special case and I'm still not sure what the best approach is for that. I imagine you would have to mail your device to the destination before you cross or just leave it at home. Alternatively, store the encrypted data in the cloud, download it at the destination, then wipe it from the device when you're done.

In that case, full disk encryption is the only effective mitigation. As far as I know, there isn't a legal way to make you decrypt a personal device.

> a minority hordes all the loot and pays goons to shoot hungry people

With analysis as generic and shallow as this, I think "muricans" are better off with their willful and feigned ignorance.
