Line must go up. Part of me wonders if the economic ideology might be what causes more than just a gradual decline.

Wouldn't a decline be good? Or is the theory that we can only do collapse, not decline?

Thanks, that was the part I didn't get.

I'm working on something similar for a PyCon talk.

While I agree that there is a problem of recognition and appreciation, I also feel like the spirit of making a small contribution without expecting a return is what enables the open whole source ecosystem that many of us benefit from.

Is it just me, or did they make the examples in the video comically unintuitive? Painting swatches without color, a guide pamphlet without a map, assembly instructions without diagrams?

Is this supposed to be humor that I'm not getting, or are they really saying, "look at this solution to a problem you would have if you did normal things in the worst possible way"? It almost feels like the video is trolling us.

The thing I don't understand about things like smart light switches is why the default failure mode isn't just a normal dumb switch?

I've been saved by the commit hash in the dependency when reviving an old Python project. I could locate a fork of the repo and use the same version to get the code going again. I ended up vendoring the dep.

> It's always possible to break a perfect system

A perfect system is either extremely limited in scope or flawed in it's assumptions.

> Quiet is not proof that nobody is recording, and a detection is not proof that anyone is

So, you might sometimes know that someone might be recording?

I don't want to dismiss that as useless, but that is a difficult signal to incorporate into behavior.

> “There are two types of people: those who have suffered a catastrophic loss of data, and those who will.”

When I was a teenager, I was the reason for data loss for my dad, twice. Both times it was because I was re-partitioning a hard drive to install linux.

You would think that taught me a lesson about backups, instead it reminds me every now and again to be grateful for an awesome dad and aspire to handle situations with my kid similarly :)

I love an e-ink display project!

The one thing that always trips me up in projects like this is power delivery in a way that I'm happy with. I always end up having a USB cable looking awkward somewhere or being limited in where I put my project

Sorry, I wasn't implying your advice doesn't carry weight. Was more just thinking about the things that (used to) happen when you introduce more parties to process of creating software.

But why stop at rewriting in another language. Get another sub agent to invent a new language, create a database, query language and maybe another few DSLs. Then you've got an ecosystem!

You can now re-position your initial solution and sell the client access to some agents that will implement & configure the ecosystem to suit their initial needs!

And don't forget the agents that you'll need to train the customer to use the whole thing!
