Why? If they’re democratically voted, what’s wrong with it?

Australia has no term limits and has famously had the longest serving prime minister (12 years) followed by extremely short terms. All seemed to represent the general will of the population.

I think your experience would vary hugely based on your skin colour (ie. the tribalism)

Well that would be assault (at least, battery probably too), so wouldn’t fall under the hypothetical $1000 threshold.

There's a joke here about the US adopting the SI system... but it would be sad whichever way the punchline lands.

> This strikes me as strange. If they wanted the maximum sentence why did they submit a video about forgiveness? Did I miss something?

Just normal emotional manipulation.

Present the victim as an angel who was so perfect that they forgave the perpetrator => the perpetrator is an irredeemable villain for harming the angel => maximum penalty

The parent was proposing tying permanent residency to taxes paid or something. If you've paid $1M in taxes, you've demonstrated that you're not likely to become a burden on the state.

Noted. Are you going to enforce the entirety of the site guidelines?

> HN is for sharing between humans

My (and others’) comments are knee jerks when that guideline gets violated.

> We also chose to build it the hard way by not forking Chromium

Are they building off firefox/servo/ladybird? I couldn’t find a quick answer but the ios/mac Orion is based on WebKit (I guess webkit is further up the fork ancestry than Chromium)?

> The problem is structural

> The policy is asymmetric, and that's what makes it harmful.

Well I found the problem already

> Monopoly is a word that has a real meaning

Correct

> Amazon has nothing even approaching a monopoly

Sortof? It probably doesn’t have a monopoly in any segment that matters, but it does have many illegal monopolies (as defined by US FCR and the Sherman Act).

Evidence: Amazon has been found guilty of being an illegal monopoly multiple times already.

> DigitalOcean is a business

Business typically need to pay invoices for services they asked for?

So whoever industrialises before there's scientific consensus on climate change gets to keep the benefits of their pollution and those who don't have to somehow skip that part of the tech tree and jump straight to renewables/nuclear?

I can see why the countries that were not first to industrialise are not on board with that idea.

I think you’re deliberately being obtuse.

The rights holders that got a settlement out of Anthropic spent two years and probably a fortune fighting in court. If that’s “easy”, then sure, this is a solved problem and there’s no point discussing it.

> An example where no one attemped to hold anyone liable isn't a counterexample to what happens when we do.

Yes it is (specifically, a counter example to it being easy, not that it’s possible). The whole world saw HuggingFaces get hacked and the collective legal response was crickets. The same world that’s had its legal system throw the DMCA and unauthorised access to computers legal book at researchers, games preservationists and random people trying to access media that they can’t licence in their region.
