I think it's too late to try to pin down the term "open source" to any one particular meaning. Instead I think we can evolve to something like what Creative Commons has done, and use various terms to describe various "sub-philosophies" for things like copyleft, CLA free/required, non-compete clauses, etc. Although this will be hard to orchestrate since there's no trademark on "open source" (unlike on "creative commons" for example). I will dig into this more in future posts (I'm the author of the post)

Btw, what does TFA mean? (I'm new to hackernews)

thanks!

I'm the author of the article, I may have made it too long.

TLDR:

- the term "Open Source" was used for at least 13 years prior to OSI's "invention" of the term. It was used in linux and windows developer communities, on national TV in the USA, in commercial software businesses and releases, and at tradeshows. It usually referred to platform portability, the open development model and disclosing of software (sometimes with commercial restrictions).

- OSI gave the term a new meaning, which was both very strict, and also very different from usage at the time

- OSI was never able to trademark the term and therefore has "pinky promised" to the community they get to define what the term means, and the community & industry mostly went with it. Their claims of inventing the term have been repeatedly disputed, but (to my knowledge) never corrected.

The good news is, I think there actually is a harmonious way forward which will accommodate the different "subgroups" of understanding. But that's material for a followup post.

The UI might be a bit too minimal. it's not clear to me why it has multiple text fields (i assumed one might be the title, and the others for content, but both of them seem to be rendered inline as 1 sentence)

live preview would also be nice.

do you intend this to be more for (personal) journaling or blogging? (if the latter, some kind of integration with hugo would be nice)
