A sober analysis, but this is the same story that's been told for years at this point. I haven't been buying new shares, but I'd rather avoid the capital gains tax if I can.

Those version numbers don't necessarily correspond to equal increases in "difficulty", though.

There's a sort of magical thinking needed to answer a question like that. You might say it comes down to "feel" of the model; i.e., the indefinable differences in the way that they speak to the user and approach problem solving. Perhaps Opus is suited for tasks that tackle new ground, while Sonnet might be better at tasks that are more grounded in the code.

Ultimately it's slightly ridiculous to define model capability on a single axis. It's like a standardized test. Sure, you can line people up by their ACT score, but that doesn't mean a doctor and a brilliant artist who both do well on the ACT have an identical intelligence or approach to life. It just can't be captured.

Why try to make things that are good? Why care about anything? Why not just turn our minds over to the machines, and let them rock us to sleep like babies?

I think you missed the message of the post -- sure, the typewriters are ostensibly the objective of the website, but there was a separate, interesting challenge that he enjoyed for, you know, human reasons: it's fun to learn new things and apply what you learned. In this case, it's software development, but it could easily be learning how to fix a car, how to cook a certain cuisine, how to play an instrument.

Sure, the mission is the end goal: having a fixed car, a completed meal, a sonata you can rehearse. These are all good for you, the viewer, to admire. But that's not where the enjoyment comes from for the creator. It's completely empty satisfaction.

Getting to the point where these headlines depress me. I just wish they would stop getting better. I don't know where my career is gonna be in a few years.
