Capitalism is generally defined by the market effect. Information about what people want is collected by sales. This information informs sellers about what to make. That’s its primary feature.
By definition, this ignores externalities.
Here is a simple example. I am a taxi driver. The market sets the price of my services. When I drive, I emit CO2 into the atmosphere. I do not pay for CO2 emissions. It’s an externality of the transaction.
Capitalism has no way of measuring (getting a price signal) on the externality. So under capitalism, that externality doesn’t exist.
If you want to be responsible for your own compute security, you can run Linux.
IMO this is a good balance: hobbyist or professionals who know what they’re doing have an OS, and people who don’t care can go to Best Buy. Everyone wins
LLM development is jumpy. It’s hard to extrapolate very far ahead.
But realistically, it’s the lack of any meaningful enforcement of ethical behavior. I mean it’s not like the Trump admin is going to prosecute criminality. More likely they’ll send a gift basket congratulating Scam Altman on a con well done.
This isn’t a sacrifice, it’s a career move. If you got lucky and “made” $20M by signing a contract at the right time, then you’re done working for other people.
Poverty is great for OpenAI
The public debt, obviously.
> If I stop working and don't pay tax, I didn't rob you.
Depends if you have income from capital.
> Me paying less tax doesn't rob you.
Depends on the tax code.
> Stupid spending of your taxes on things you don't need or want robs you.
Fair.
The argument comes down to the "fairness" of society. What level of taxation is "fair"? There's probably not a single right answer.
However, there are answers that result somewhat deterministically in rising inequality. So for those of us who don't want to live in a highly inequitable society, there is a "more right" answer.
Now, I'm sure other people (presumably people who are doing well under high inequality) would think the "right answer" is to increase inequality as much as possible.
Personally, I don't think that kind of society would be very nice to live in.
But it's not even the case that rich people pay capital gains necessarily. It's very easy to live off debt and never realize gains. When you die, your basis resets and you never pay any taxes ever.
This is how people like Bezos and Trump have years where they don't pay any taxes at all.
