Fastmail is excellent. They haven’t banned AI but their approach (set up MCP so AI power users can pull in their email data) is a lot more thoughtful and entirely nonintrusive so far.

Correct. The public is over sparkle buttons and bad search results.

The future of AI integrations need to be subtle, useful, and not overpromise but add a big “AI makes mistakes not our fault” label on it.

In cooking, maybe that looks like a discovery tool. It should also be possible to tag the recipe library to link back to videos of techniques. There’s plenty of cool stuff that makes sense without needing to scream “we made it AI!”

Something similar has been going on in Washington, DC, but ours is organic. Someone fires up a “teen takeover” to a popular area, it floods with kids 99% of which are just there to harmless goof off and see their friends, and of course a small group of jerks starts a fight with no regard for the people around them.

The city council is treating this like a curfew issue. The problem isn’t the kids, it’s the algorithm. But nobody seems to have any power to bang on TikTok’s door and tell them to cut it out.

And at the pace OP seems to be going, nobody is pausing for long enough to think about whether the 50 PRs they just YOLO’d even make sense.

That will end well.

I'm not so sure.

I make a point to own my own books. Even if I first read them as ebooks or audiobooks, if I want to keep it forever I'll pick up a used copy (they're cheap).

I've considered the same for film. The only things I looked up that are just completely unavailable are Streaming Original series. Maybe this has to do with the sort of library I'd want to keep, but I don't think so.

Yes. And no person would have suggested this before they were trying to bend over backwards to prove LLMs are just like people.

That’s one of the more interesting personal apps I’ve heard about in a while. Can I ask how you have it set up and what you like about it?

The problem is the math doesn’t work. Apple News is the closest thing to a real version of this, but no publication can survive on that alone.

Similar efforts never hit critical mass.

I have thoughts on what could work but that’s a longer topic for another day.

You’re forgetting this had never been done before.

This is just a more asinine version of Great Man Theory, but in this case the great men are some very confident futurist dudes writing comments on the internet.

There’s a good number of nuclear power plants and nuclear submarines in operation, so yes, that’s technically true.

Oh yeah. I discovered this back in February. Faster and cheaper is better, because faster means you can focus.

Frenetic multitasking is for suckers.

Sounds like a culture problem. I’ve never had a team I lead not give a shit. Even if the project is dumb (some projects are dumb), there’s enough pride in competence and desire not to dump garbage on the people around you to ensure they at least want to try.
