You got voted down, but your sentiment is reasonable. Times are pretty rough right now, politicians seem worse than ever, and people seem to be more ready to hate each other than ever. But the trajectory is controlled by individuals.

Heinlein wrote this in a dark period in history too. The writing of it was resistance against the trajectory of his times. Belief is a choice. Action is a choice. If you don't feel optimism, that's OK to recognize. But then make a choice: to believe something good about your neighbor, to honor something noble about someone you disagree with, and to act as if we each can do better than societal trends seem to indicate.

Reads as nice memories of a memorable character who was a part of the evolution of our industry. I enjoyed it.

Tell me you're ignorant about computer science history, without telling me you're ignorant about computer science history.

I chose Algebra II, which I'm currently re-visiting as an adult learner starting a new direction in college. It immediately thrust me into problems I've not seen before. I skipped multiple times and was never presented with something I recognized. I went into settings an turned on Algebra I, thinking that would start with more basics, but had the same issue. Gave up after 5-6 tries, feeling just as frustrated and dumb as I do in class.

Programmer of 27 years, doing math by other names. I continue to be frustrated by how bad math-as-a-programming-language is. This tool did nothing to improve that feeling.

I got this working a few years ago on era-appropriate hardware. It was awful -- unstable and crashy. There were glimpses of what they were trying for, but it was painfully obvious they were a long way from even the stability of 7.5. I'm sure it was a tough call, but whoever decided to axe it made the right one. Besides, if it had succeeded, they might not have bought NeXT and we might not have gotten OS X!

I tried Optery. It got a good chunk done in two months, then the rest were just pending for a year... until I cancelled. Felt like they were just keeping me on the monthly dole while they didn't do anything.
