What in these videos is so much cooler than what you can do on an Apple approved one? Other than, "As a programmer, I can do anything", I just personally don't see any capabilities unlocked that I can't have with an app or whatever. But I might be missing something.

It is actually entertaining that there is a plausible use for the most super-villain-coded obsession with volcanoes

I’m more interested in the folks continuing to use and benefit from the products of Elon’s companies while simultaneously condemning other folks for using products from Elon’s companies.

Their defense would presumably be something along the lines of it being too expensive at that moment to sell the car and get something else. That is the price they are willing or unwilling to pay for their moral position.

He makes an entire list of how horrible Elon is as an indictment of Gruber for using X, and then explains that he is still driving his test as he had for the last nine years without even a shred of irony.

Putting the “bought b4 Elon was crazy” bumper stickers on the tesla but not selling it, puts a price range on how terrible one thinks Elon really is.

How is Face ID un-accessible for those with visual impairment? I hadn't heard that before.

I've had the same trouble with AI tech docs, and I struggled to articulate it. There is something difficult about trying to point to the specific "problem" with a given document

Craft isn’t craft if it doesn’t produce something. So enjoying the utility of it is not a secondary aspect. That’s a key difference between craft and art.

Famously, the Apollo Mission control team learned to handle multiple conversations stream simultaneously. The side effect was that going to cocktail parties was a nightmare, because they couldn’t turn it off.

This is so obviously true. Most people that had sudden wfh transitions after or during COVID that I know even with well established networks and families, have really grieved the loss of daily contact with coworkers.

Working alone at home is far more novel and unusual than any arrangement of work and socialization that has existed in the last 500 years

I’d hardly consider this a side effect. Decreasing traffic in one path within a network of exchange has the direct effect of increasing traffic/demand on alternate paths. Increased demand == increased prices.

I think what gets conflated are two aspects.

1. LLM/transformer technology is legitimately amazing and revolutionary. 2. In the end, they function as an enormous, effective database for most human knowledge.

Point 1 obscures the fact that if someone just created an SQL database with every digital artifact in existence and provided it for free upon request, there would be no ambiguity whether that was legal or not.

But distillation, etc obscures this relationship and it looks like something other than straight lookup, at least in part because it is obviously more than that.
