I think the problem is actually 100% the reverse of what you've come up with, the ultra-rich are stealing from the poor essentially all the time. It never stops, there's never really that much pushback and it leads to in the millions of deaths a year. Look up the DOGE cuts for a really obvious, simple, not really arguable example of this.

This is why societies across the world but particularly hyper-capitalist societies are all suffering a similar set of ills.

I feel that modern society has grown just about enough to mostly stop blaming the impoverished for their own poverty, but the zeitgeist in the US has still not grown that much beyond the red scare. None of the possible solutions to the US's relentless financial punishment regime will be accepted fast enough for the people suffering now to benefit from them.

ETA: That this post is ostensibly in our (our = the highly capitalist website frequented by highly capitalist engineers and businessmen) ballpark and has gone three hours without much comment is pretty stark.

Double ETA: Downvoted within a minute of making that edit, so we're all reading it but having nothing to say? :) I'm glad at least there's proof someone on HN aside from me maybe read the linked article.

I think for 99% of working age adults you can source some amount of their health woes to the working pattern they're glued to. It is obvious for those on the night shift because it's so standout, but every person becomes a slightly more haggard version of themselves when they're doing 40 hours a week and it's only noticeable to those around them and only when they've spent some time out of work.

Very strong attempt to both-sides a visibly one sided issue.

Am I missing something, or is the only way to get the actual URL to any website out of this to put it in your saves and then look for it in there? That kinda sucks.

The share button giving an opaque URL that tells you nothing about the site you're actually going to see combined with there being no one click obvious place to get the actual URL makes this really cumbersome to use.

> It uses statistical correlation to indicate causation.

Up front, it doesn't. It's a meta study, the authors actually go out of their way at one point to note it's not causative, this is unfair on your part.

>As a person with severe ADHD, who has never taken any medication, I find this study troubling. [...] People on ADHD medicine are also going through mental health treatments and get special care and privileges in society. At the same time, the effects of ADHD medication numb their responses and emotions to what seems outwardly stable and normal but deep inside it is an inhibitor of development.

You've never taken the medication but you're suddenly an expert on what it does and how it feels? Right. Why not be honest and just say you don't buy the conclusions of the study due to your emotional response to the topic?

If I fall down the stairs and my broken leg heals fine, can I say those are my best years?

It looks like you've done exactly what the other commenter did, googled some keywords and then posted links you didn't read.

> Which ones specifically? The Maldives, Tuvalu, Kiribati and the Marshall Islands all still exist, and some have experienced growth [3]

Solomon Islands, have fun learning.

That report for 2025-2026 is evidence for the claim that the coral reefs have had their best 5 years ever?

I can't tell if this is sarcastic, or you're just lying?

> The planet is greener, even the Sahara is shrinking

The UK was baked brown in the heat and it was so bad it was visible by satellite, we had uncharacteristic wildfires all summer. Google has literally no idea what you're talking about by claiming the Sahara is shrinking, the best I can find is "maybe the expansion is slowing?"

> The Great Coral Reef has just had its best 5 years ever.

Apparently it had its most devastating coral bleaching event just 2 years ago, so I'm not sure this is true?

> On average, crops produce more due to higher CO2 levels.

I mean, yeah if you are into the average crop? People tend to like stuff like corn and coffee which are threatened by raised heat levels. With current heat levels we're projected to lose upwards of 1/5th the corn harvest by 2030.

> Pacific islands failed to sink.

I mean some of them did, like a decade ago, just none of the ones you care about.

> Hurricanes failed to become more frequent

Same frequency but wind force increases by water temperature, so a cat 1 hurricane like Rafael ends up a cat 3 hurricane due to climate change. I am seeing a pattern with your selective presentation of the facts.

> Fewer people died due to cold temperatures

Is that not because a large share of the world's old were taken out by COVID within the last 6 years? That is the group most likely to die to cold.

"The sites that are there for ad impressions" are the websites, there's no invision powerboards in 2026, the alternatives have been gutted and eaten by the sites there for ad impressions. HN is an exceptionally poor replacement but it's the closest thing I've found. I don't enjoy that has the exact same dynamics as reddit but the ads are on pages I click through to instead of directly on the site, it sucks that I still don't recognise any usernames here.

By next week this thread might not have existed at all. The usership of the site likely won't remember it. If I was posting half the content on this site and then stopped and was replaced by another username, would anyone notice? It seems like there is no real community to be found, we've destroyed our own habitat.

I would love if it could be a false dichotomy, but given conservative estimates pin about 30% of online posts to AI it seems like there may be a third outcome: we patch the visible holes of humans posting less and less from disinterest by making the bots post more and more.

The end result is that comment sections aren't enticing to join in on, just read. Which is perfect for ad impressions.

> Are they interesting, well thought out, well articulated, and insightful?

The average AI post is likely a carbon copied reddit comment from 2011, that is to say, "no".

Comment · 12 days ago
I stopped using reddit entirely because it's bots talking to other bots on threads posted by bots, I stopped making posts at the start of this year because I no longer know if a human being is ever reading them. I then deleted the account.

I am increasingly feeling that way about HN, too. If this is all the equivalent of a videogame conversation with an AI, why am I bothering to put the effort in?

"Hey I'm a complete nobody and I'm also really rude, please answer my questions" is not a winning play, nor is the rest of this dumb bait you're trying.
Comment · 15 days ago
What motivates someone to make a new account just for this kind of mundane and inappropriately rude comment? Why should anyone answer you?
