Yes. By and large the talks of LLM as the reason for all the layoffs across big tech are just a marketing spin. Companies are going through rounds of cost reduction for reasons that are as old as the invention of the stock market.

I always think of that line from Doctorow: "If you want to know how Amazon will treat its coders once they can be readily replaced, just look at Amazon warehouse workers and drivers".

Of note, something similar exists in OSMAnd~. You can download wikipedia articles for areas you downloaded. It's very useful when you visit a place IMO

I reckon that was an attempt to fend off the enemy. "Everyone expects us to set 196 bits of entropy, but you know what they won't expect? A single byte!"

Hey that's a byte of entropy! And one of the rare cases where choosing a larger value might offer you better "protection" against serialized brute force attacks

> That doesn't excuse what Elizabeth Holmes did or explain what others in her circle may be guilty of.

Thanks!

Surely the documentaries are made in a way that's depicts that very accentued, manipulative, borderline psychopathic person. This is likely more than she was in real life. She might even have been motivated by genuine will to improve the diagnostics field. So yeah you might be "deceived" by these docudramas.

I fear that this kind of poetic write-up muddies the water into "oh, maybe things are more nuanced, and played on her weird personality and background to make things look worse, maybe it wasn't so bad".

People got misdiagnosed and suffered directly because of her. She's every bit guilty of that, as deserving of a harsh judgement as any person directly causing that kind of harm.

I was sitting at the movies with my kids 2w ago, watching the last Shawn the Sheep movie. Reflecting over how in 2026 they are still animating frame by frame with clay puppets, how they still embrace their craft while a cheap and easy solution exists, and how good the results look. And wondering what that was telling about me. Shawn the Sheep had a profound impact on me, an adult in my fourties.

> Cadillac's Sergio Perez, [...] was less kind. "It felt like you were in a rental kart and you ran out of time," the Mexican explained. "You were putting your foot down and accelerating and nothing was coming.

You know the problem is really bad if even Cadillac drivers notice the difference.

I'm not sure I understand the difference between the problem and the solution there. If I understand correctly (which maybe I am not), it seems like this boils down to "you don't need SQLite memory, you need text based memory". Which is maybe ok, I'm all for low-tech, but I doubt this is any better than what it's posed to replace.

My main issue with LLMs is that by construction they work primarily by addition, and are very task oriented. If you have documentation, it adds blobs corresponding to its task and that's it, and soon enough you need to break your documentation onto chapters and you're back at square one.

Yeah, maybe if a bottle of crappy wine is less than $30, people will buy it.

That rings so true!

I'm vibe-coding an app to practice german, I want the most bare-bones possible, just something for myself. In the sign-in page, the clanker added SEVEN slogans and catch-phrases:

- A more human way to learn - Find your words. Then make them yours. - Good conversations make a language stick. Start where you are, and build from there. - One conversation at a time - Thoughtful practice. Your pace. Your progress. - YOUR LANGUAGE SPACE - A quiet space to learn, made just for you. - Sign in to pick up where you left off.

Thanks to AI and IoT, we can now have vibe coded fridges and ovens that might have fantastic features and work 80% of the time!

The future truly is incredible
