The other night I watched a team of 4 dudes row from America to Europe. In a row boat. No sails. Makes me think of the Tom Hanks quote:

> What actually happened is cooler than what could happen

It’s hard to think of a fictional story that beats actually rowing across the world.

I don’t. I think we’ll zoom right past that benchmark. In a couple years your grandma will be able to build real, ambitious software with AI better than you can today. Shortly after that AI won’t even need Grandma.

> you'll be able to be similarly dismissive and condescending to them, too

And? Who are these people that need all this sympathy from internet strangers? Grow the fuck up and go solve your own damn problems. I can’t stand these “I need internet strangers to tell me that my life is, in fact, hard” people.

Maybe the EU should figure out how to attract businesses so they want to release there.

Well, given that you’re not a Tesla shareholder, you likely give poor financial advice anyway. How long have people been trying to short Tesla? A decade at least?

Nah. That’s not it. Software is just legitimately harder than most physical engineering (notice I didn’t say all).

How often do skyscrapers fall over, or bridges collapse, or your CPUs fail unexpectedly, or submarines implode. Rarely. In fact, I bet most people reading this thought of the same few examples.

Then look at software. When is the last time you encountered a bug? Have you ever heard of bug free software? Even at the elite, smartest, most educated levels of software, there are still bugs everywhere. Humans are essentially incapable of writing bug free software. And it isn’t because a bunch of uneducated dummies that didn’t get degrees are the ones writing it (as you arrogantly implied). It’s because it’s way fucking harder to do perfectly or near perfectly.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t incredibly hard physical engineering. Obviously there is insanely difficult engineering in nearly any variety. But if you ask a civil engineer to design you a perfect bridge, they probably will. Ask a software engineer with all the experience and education in the world to build you a perfect podcasting app, it simply isn’t happening.

“Half functional” is a great way to describe the new Siri.

Gemini backed Siri sucks too though. The frequency in which it just.. does nothing, is crazy. Joke still works.

The text-only purists on HN are getting very tiresome. It’s seriously in every fucking post that links to a site with JavaScript enabled. We get it. You’re elite. Now stop talking about it.

Do you also demand that McDonald’s employees only eat McDonald’s?

They use their product to do what it’s best at, and use humans where it isn’t yet good enough.

Isn’t that exactly what this is? How is better visualization not core functionality to what ChatGPT is?

If not.. what?

You made up some cool sci-fi.

> In an April 1985 InfoWorld editorial, James Fawcette wrote that Gates had said something like: “When we set the upper limit of PC-DOS at 640K, we thought nobody would ever need that much memory.”

So yes, Bill Gates denies that story. So it just depends on who you believe.

But to flat out say he never said it is too confident.
