"Satire, drafted by the machines it covers and approved by the humans they haven't replaced yet."

That kind of explains why the art sucks and the satire isn't funny.

This has to be a troll account. You're admitting to cooperating with ICE so that both of you could meet your quotas? You collaborated to have ICE pick up people at the courthouse, where they were because they were presumably trying to obey the law?

And no, illegal immigrants aren't voting in US elections, stop that.

I mean, I agree, but whenever it comes up there's always someone who refuses to call a spade a spade... I'm curious how the pro-prediction market set would argue this is ok (other than to shrug and say "it's just one more thing to predict, why would we try to decide what can and can't be predicted?").

Doesn't this weaken the argument that these prediction markets serve a distinct purpose other than gambling? I thought the idea was that prediction markets can help surface information, drawing on the wisdom of the crowd (some of whom might be familiar with the topic) to extract actionable insights. This is just sports betting, pure and simple... you can argue it's a market or a security, but whatever financial instrument you wrap it in, it's still just sports betting.

Bad take. These kind of hybrid regimes or "electoral autocracies" are kind of the flavor du jour of modern attempts towards authoritarian governments. You take control democratically, and then build a system where you control as much of the apparatus of democracy as possible: you change rules or laws to ensure opposition parties cannot gain an advantage in elections; you take control of or ally with the owners of media institutions to push your agenda; you concentrate powers under offices that are easy to control, such as an executive or judicial body. When these regimes topple, as with Orban earlier this year and Vucic now, it is because the autocrats overestimated their control. Orban didn't think it was possible for the usually fractious opposition to get the votes to defeat him, but Magyar managed it. Pressure from outside helps, too; when Orban took power, he did so as a center-right figure aligned with the largest political block in the EU (and got support from many of his counterparts, especially Merkel). By the time he lost power, much of Europe had distanced itself from Hungary and that pressure was being felt internally.

I think the important takeaway here is not that "a lack of violence means that there wasn't real oppression," but rather that modern autocrats are trying to execute a playbook whereby they retain the appearance of democracy to legitimize their rule as a mandate from the people while stacking the deck as much in their favor as possible. Indeed, trying to violently retain power kind of defeats the purpose of the charade; by relinquishing control, the autocrats can treat defeat as a temporary setback, not a permanent loss. Expect this playbook to evolve as more hybrid regimes fall out of favor.

This is what I did, but I found that it didn't preserve metadata when I tried to reupload my photos to Immich... everything showed up as though the picture was taken the day I uploaded it.

I run it on a Raspberry Pi 4B. External SSD for storage, runs like a champ.

They had 8 intermediate certs with private keys under 1 byte (<256). The most egregious was 4, but any of those 8 were pitiful.

Not quite; Darrah says in his video that the direction from EA flip-flopped between client server and peer-to-peer several times during development, so the code they'd be salvaging would be the original peer-to-peer code. But since that code isn't part of the final game and Bioware is going away... I kind of doubt that code exists in a state where it could be re-integrated with the retail release of Anthem.

I can acknowledge that someone is intelligent, skilled, or talented without respecting them or their decision to apply their intelligence, skills, or talent to an ignoble cause.

I would trade React for a world without Facebook any day of the week.

They're taking the more nihilistic stance that progress now is just a delay, and the outcome is treated as inevitable. Honestly, it's hard to see it going any other way: plenty of towns, cities, and counties are just waiting out the storm of public opinion and will move on once people get tired of protesting the same thing over and over.

Doesn't mean I don't think that protest and outrage over surveillance aren't good things, just that these things require constant vigilance or else we're stuck with them. Personally, what I see happening is a further bifurcation of American life, where we see communities opposed to constant surveillance contrasted with those that embrace the panopticon.
