I used to deride people complaining about the acts of a private company whose users freely and willfully engage with that company’s services, especially claims about “free speech” when the company owner also has the free speech claim to make whatever policies they see fit for their privately owned business.

Now I think it’s pretty clear that the main limiter of speech is not the government but rather a handful of private companies, so the first amendment is no longer adequate to protecting speech. We need to pass laws about opening these platforms once they reach a certain size. Will we get more neo-nazi profiles? Sure, but that’s the trade off for having a platform for positive revolutionaries and journalists and I think the trade off is worth it.

This is one of my bigger issues with generative AI.

It used to be easy to spot effort: a cool logo on a business card, an interesting website design, a recruiter email that speaks to a specific experience I have on my LinkedIn profile. This used to indicate that someone was willing to do a bit more than the bare minimum and gave them some legitimacy.

Now I see any of these things and I have to do the extra work to try to figure out if it was AI generated.

What about Central America?

A counterpoint to this is that we saw birth rates hover around replacement level from the 1980s until 2007. After 2007 we see a pretty steep decline up to 2026. 2007 to 2015 was mainly Gen X having kids, but this does lineup with the financial chrisis.

The percentage of American women who have a child in their lifetime is at 85%, about than same as in the 1950s. The issue is that many more people are choosing to have fewer children. This to me indicates it’s a cost issue, not some sense of impending doom about the future. You’ve already given over to the lifestyle change, the opportunity cost, and commitment to the future of earth with 1 or 2 kids - I bet not having more is strongly financially driven.

Different fees for different products. Parking outside the stadium before a football game is a much more valuable product than parking at 1pm at the edge of town.

Everyone still pays the same price.

I’m in my 4th dev job of the last 12 years and every one of them has been wildly different in terms of structure, culture, tooling, work style, etc.

Because humans were designed by evolution, a process driven by random mutations and natural selection that can become stuck at local maxima rather than producing the best possible design.

Isn’t most of the data sent between your phone and the cell tower encrypted anyways? This would only catch voice calls and SMS right?

I would never work under em who wasn’t at one point at least a decent developer.

We really just need to figure out the paying for healthcare thing, and then get money out of politics, then America is undeniably the best place in the world to live.

A few more trains would be nice too.

The trains can still charge, but what if the government pays the tab automatically?

me: 11 years experience with big tech on resume. Located in major tech city.

I get 1-2 new recruiters in my mailbox each week for different random startups. I haven’t acted on any so IDK what the process is really like, but it does seem like people are hiring. Almost 100% seem to be some sort of AI product. Senior Eng comp base seems to be in the 200-240 range plus however much worthless equity.

This tracks for me because I am a developer with a 4 year degree in a field completely unrelated to CS and I have never felt any of the stigma or othering from my coworkers on the measures you described.

I think they meant what will trade jobs look like when there are half as many highly paid knowledge workers able to fork out for their services?
