Seems pretty on-brand for the Fed

As we say in my family: "close enough for government work!"

Wouldn't the darkening be temporary? After the bloom, the plankton are either consumed by ocean life, or die off and sink to the bottom (sequestering carbon in either case)

Hasn't this worked out in a few cases? Maybe Uber as a better solution than taxis as an example?

I'm curious what sort of unethical suggestions it's coming up with haha

I've tried but I honestly start getting a headache after an hour, more from the weight of the device on my head than eye strain. And that's with the dual loop band

Agreed :)

But severe stroke victims may not be able to. Hopefully tech like this can restore that ability for them one day soon

That museum might be my absolute favorite in the world. Absolutely stunning collection of aviation + space history on display

Absurd headline. Gizmodo's anti-tech bias is showing pretty clearly here. This makes total sense as a product strategy. Not sure what's so controversial about giving more reach to Threads posts as this already works pretty well for Instagram stories

Are big-iron investments like this even useful for an outright shooting war with another major power? It feels like our defense budget could be better spent on more cost-effective, unmanned tech

I initially mis-read this as IKEA and was ready for a much more bizarre read

"recap.engagement.is_replied": 27 "recap.engagement.is_replied_reply_engaged_by_author": 75

I wonder if this is why threads rank so obnoxiously high. They get artificially boosted by the author replying to their own tweet

Yep. A very sad truth.

It would be quite a challenge to re-create what FB circa 2006-2010 or so was like. Before influencers and engagement farming. Before it became "social media" and was just a "social utility"

The problem is that even if you re-built that product, it would quickly get overrun by engagement optimizers. If the product is open, they'll rush in.

Group chat apps somewhat fill this product void, but not completely. There was something magical about a social network being somewhat open & organic that group chats can't capture

Con artists before the modern era were reigned in by their local communities. A grifter would gain a bad local reputation and find themselves unable to continue running their scheme as they'd run out of rubes to dupe. They'd have to leave to the next town if they wanted to keep grifting. But now with social media, grifters can instantly find a new audience of rubes who are unaware of their past exploits

This makes me so optimistic for the future of YC. Congrats Garry!
