I won't speak for other countries, but in the US, the answer to "Why do we spend so much on X" is typically because X is in large part a jobs program for special interests who are really good at lobbying, whether it is healthcare or defense or any other industry.

Representatives like high employment in their districts and employees of X like high salaries. It's an incentive-compatible equilibrium.

That's an exorbitant amount per GB.

I guess at least it's capped somewhat? Is there more background preceding this legislation?

This seems as ridiculous as having 1TB internet caps for residential ISPs in 2026.

If the system BSODs, you have no way of getting to the event log without restarting and successfully booting into the OS again.

That is a strictly worse system than displaying BSOD information right away, which lets you diagnose it immediately, it's a downgrade, which is what this entire thread is about.

Is RenTech more than a rounding error amongst all active traders?

Is it more than a rounding error amongst ALL (active/passive) traders?

I'm more interested in the economics here - is it realistic to produce a land mine for under 100 Euros if you include CapEx and your volume is 1 million units?

You do realize that there exist multiple Pareto frontiers, at least for every arbitrary combination of parameters for a given benchmark?

Obviously your marketing team is going to use the Pareto frontier where your model has improved the most and compares favorably against competitors.

Maybe people are deterministic as well? We have certain physical arrangement of chemical pathways in our systems, so maybe free will is a complete illusion.

Just because we ponder about our output and choices and retrospect does not in itself mean that it was non-deterministic.

Assortative mating is a weak form of eugenics.

> what do we do about them as a society?

Same thing we do now - some are on welfare, some are homeless and some are in prisons.

Ideally we can be more compassionate towards these people without also placing a huge tax burden on everyone else.

The electricity generation in the article is shown per capita.

Now I'm not saying we should generate as much as humanly possible, because even with renewables that has a cost.

And some things have gotten genuinely more efficient (compare modern heat pumps to heating available in 1968).

But why shouldn't we maintain the levels our parents enjoyed? And use the extra capacity if anything for EVs, grid stabilization, medical research, etc.

So population degrowth is a pretty separate issue.

When downloading huge media files, the only speed you're being limited by is your bandwidth.

Everything else is completely negligible.

> No, since we're adults, aware of these nuances, it's not the elephant in the room.

You'd be surprised. People aware of such nuances are usually a very small minority in any room.
