Stallman was right, information wants to be free, and there is no such thing as a friendly vulnerability, a friendly intelligence agency, or a friendly government.

To call that "a bit cherry-picking" is a serious understatement.

BTC has grossly outperformed SPY over the last 3 years (+129% btc, +64% spy), last 4 years (+271% btc, +95% spy) and last 6+ years (6y: +457% btc, +115% spy), and the gap only grows the further back you go.

last 1 year, last 2 years, and last 5 years are the only "last n years" windows in which SPY has outperformed BTC. There are 19 of those windows to choose from, and only 3 where SPY wins, and that's near the bottom of the trough of the current halving cycle, no less. At the peak of the halving cycle, there are no windows in which SPY beats BTC.

A big problem for anyone who trusted their security to a commercial provider with a less audited codebase than the BTC core wallet software.

>You don’t want your actual currency to gain value just by waiting

You might not, I do.

Tell you what: you go short btc/usd, I'll go long btc/usd, and let's circle back in 10 years and see who did better.

Compare a purchase of any commodity, bond, precious metal, or ETF/mutual fund in 2008 to BTC's performance since 2008. Or 2009, or 2010, or 2011, or 2012, or 2013, or 2014, or 2015, or 2016, or 2017, or 2018...

Yet another reminder of the first rule of crypto: Not your keys, not your coins.

The argument isn't that they're unhappy, it's that most of them are not decamillionaires, despite what the GP I was responding to seemed to believe. Post I was responding do originally implied that earning 500k for 20 years was enough to make someone a decamillionaire, but edited to account for taxes and cost of living now.

That's ignoring taxes, too. Real take home for a single filer earning 500k in SF is ~$282k. Take out another $48k for median-ish SF rent ($4k*12) and that "$500k" is already south of 250 before most of your bills are accounted for.

The customer isn't compelled to transact with a business using AI any more than right wingers are forced to interact with trans people though. If you don't like a practice a business is doing, just don't do business with them. To that end, any "harm" suffered by a customer due to AI use by a business is essentially voluntarily chosen by the customer, no? Going to a daycare that gives children AI books and then being upset about it is like a bigot going to a trans pride convention and then being upset that there are trans people around them. It's like... you chose this, didn't you? If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to be there.

Reflecting on this more, I'm not sure traditional illustrations actually do much for me in general. I am incredibly deeply moved by certain examples of photography, cinematography (both with and without explicit storytelling attached), architecture, and engineering, but I don't think paintings in general have much of an impact on me emotionally.

Maybe I'm just uncultured.

In what subset of the population? Maybe this is just due to my own neurodivergence, but abstract art does absolutely nothing for me emotionally or cognitively... it's arguably less interesting than a blank canvas because at least a blank canvas invites me to imagine what could be, rather than imposing something so meaningless and ineffectual upon me.

My point isn't that the impacts are remotely similar, it's that the rationale for the aggression comes from the same place - enforcement of one's arbitrary selected moral framework on other people who don't share that framework and are just trying to live their lives. Inside of the head of the anti-trans activist and the anti-AI activist, it's the same gears churning producing the same pattern for the same reasons, one's just more harmful than the other.

P.S. No need to apologize for politely expressing ideological disagreement :)

>Real photos of your actual food

Many if not most restaurants weren't using real photos of their actual food long before gen AI was a thing, especially in promotional materials.

>art needs to generate positive emotions

Is abstract art "not real art" if it doesn't generate any emotions at all?
