Best hope is jailbreaking and running custom firmware, which may open up some possibilities.
For instance, we all probably had to go through math classes where the professor writes so fast that it's a hand cramping race just to even scribble together enough notes to follow each gigantic derivation later for learning purposes. Nobody in that class is retaining any of that.
The kid who aces that class, is almost invariably someone who likes to to play with the equations in their free time at their own pace, so they get a feel for what process they need to employ toward a solution rather than brute forcing it. (When applicable, sometimes brute force is the only tactic.)
Math classes in general really, desperately need to slow down and let students grasp higher-order concepts. The number crunching method is stressful, and all it does is massively discourage bright people who may be geniuses in their field but flee University because the school made Calculus their "breakout" class.
Anecdote. When I went to University, I had a professor who graduated MIT tell the class that he'd realized how much pressure we were under in our Calculus class trying to keep up, that this was deeply unfair, and that he was erasing our last test score because they were unreflective of the performance that he knew we were capable of if we had any time for his class. Calculus was a core requirement, his class was elective, so almost every student had been forced to ignore his class, and we were amazingly lucky that he was good enough to sympathize.
This man used to work at Bell Labs and swam 200 laps a day to keep fit. And he was telling us we had it rough. I saw people cry out of gratitude.
As Peter Thiel often says, why aren't all classes at Ivy League schools simulcast on YouTube if they're so great? We have the technology, it would be a boon to all humankind. But they make money off their exclusivity. (If the teacher contact compels you, why not at least make the lectures available to all and people can pay for the tutoring, you can probably keep enrollment up that way).
I think the bit about "my team is starting to notice I'm offline" is very telling. Oh you're so fancy, you special person who doesn't tell your team when you're not available and you aren't checking your messages. You sure showed them. I bet you're just the best facilitator of communication.
Personally, I tell my team how they can and can't expect to contact me when I'm changing methods of communication. Call me crazy.
My team has "General" for company wide announcements and "random" for dumping gifs and whatnot.
There's also stuff like #sysadmin if something goes down or you spot a security bulletin and want to make sure the admin team sees it. Keep those rooms going as necessary. Low traffic, but the right people want an unread marker on them.
2) You can reliably induce near death experiences with high g-forces and drugs, for instance the experiences commonly happen to fighter pilots during training when they are subjected to high g forces in training.
The reason for the white light and tunnel and floating above your body, is that's how the brain shuts down due to loss of blood. We know this now. No need to speculate. "Hell" is a less common motif, because that's a less common brain state under those circumstances.
Next mystery, please.
He suggests ways to alter Google's engineering jobs to suit abilities females are more likely to excel at, such as making work more social.
Its almost like different doesn't mean worse.
This is the heart of the lawsuit.
Unless you mean he was fired as part of a witch hunt which was much ado about nothing, and that's a sad fact of basing firing decisions on tweets. That is true.
This is different from discriminatory hiring of women to be forced into a male oriented role. This is a substantive claim, which he accuses Google of doing. Discriminatory hiring is illegal, and also stupid, from a free market standpoint.
Tldr: If women aren't buying your product (not applying to Google), it's not the fault of women, its your product that needs to change to suit their wants and needs.
This is only sexist if you think men and women don't, as a general statistical rule, tend toward different interests along a bimodal distribution. But they do.
So take an algorithm that can flag a million YouTube videos, and maybe you steal $10,000 of monetization over cost in a few days. Nobody can afford to sue you hard on the false positives because you're mostly only hitting "nice guys" who will just change the sound and reupload. So you up the algorithm to be more profitable, wash, rinse, repeat.
That's why this is really happening.
Federal drug policy has long been, and will for the foreseeable future continue to be, dangerous nonsense.
People say "Hardware wallet" like it's a magic incantation.
What part of your carpe diem attitude helped your mom not do drugs and destroy your gestating brain before you were born?
How did you bootstrap your country so that you weren't a victim of war or starvation at a young age?
What part of your attitude ensured you were born into a modern society at the right time to be educated, instead of being a pre-agrarian human ancestor?
What part of your free will in life ensured you'd be the sort of tech person who'd post on HN rather than perhaps an ascetic who'd be living a life of poverty on the streets of Bangladesh to combat consumerist attitudes? Would that be a wrong choice to make?
That said, correlation and causation. The movers and shakers of society are likely to believe they had more control in their life. Not necessarily the other way around. But it can be helpful to envision yourself as being in control of more of your life than you really are.
