Society hated techies until we started getting ridiculous amounts of money and women figured out that they could marry a techie and instantly go up the social hierarchy. Now that this isn't happening anymore, society is back to hating techies. Tech always attracted people who were in some ways social outcasts - I've spent my formative years being bullied and now I'm supposed to love the society? I pay taxes to maintain public infrastructure while normies vandalize and misuse it when bored and I'm supposed to love that? Truly baffling.
> low empathy
Blatantly false. Name one industry where a huge chunk of experts spend their time doing volunteer work, because that's what open source is (Linux, GCC, etc.). Have you ever seen a baker just giving out free bread on weekends and calling it a hobby? I haven't.
> "bootstraps" mentality
The expectation that everyone could just vibe through life and be perfectly happy is unrealistic. There will always be winners and losers, there will always be inherent unfairness, deal with that to your best ability.
> I'm also honestly surprised that wraparound on unsigned types is not undefined behavior.
I consider it common knowledge TBH
Second, too complicated security setups often result in trivially hackable global passwords and shit like that because turns out, there are very few people willing to daily rotate and remember 30 different cryptographically random 256-bit arrays.
Third, no matter how robust your security setup is, there will always be someone who finds a flaw in it, so a much better solution is to just do bare minimum and get insurance.
It's strange to be that so many security experts are completely detached from how humans actually act.

I didn't literally ask people "How would you feel if you had not eaten breakfast?", but rather questions that naturally followed the conversation that at the same time were either hypotheticals, or some adjacent ideas that require similar shift of perspective. The "How would you feel if you had not eaten breakfast?" stands as a symbol of a general idea.
Your comment is prime example of grown-ass adults having reading comprehension of GPT-1, especially that you missed the word "like", which explicitly points that the following example isn't to be taken literally, but rather metaphorically.
I can already imagine you in a conversation going like:
- It hit me like a bolt from the blue!
- But a bolt from the blue did not hit you, did it?
I cannot believe I need to explain this shit to you.
Does years of domestic violence count? What about shootings I've witnessed but wasn't a part of? There's a school nearby and kids carry guns around here.
> Do you know anyone who has committed real violence?
I don't hang out with the violent types in the first place, so the question makes no sense.
You'd be shocked how many people cannot process basic hypotheticals. I've been in countless dialogues like this one:
- How would you feel now if you had not eaten breakfast?
- But I did eat breakfast.
