By a shit load of non-technical clients who I've developed human relationships with over the past decade and a half. I'm not especially expensive a la carte, but I have a lot of different people paying me, and I don't work that hard. Time , reputation, relationships and an unusual niche are my moat. All you AI-guys have been squacking all year about how it's going to take my job, but it's just made me way more capable and I've had the best professional year of my life this year.

So, you're still aggressively pro AI even though you recognize how quickly it is destroying the quality of online content?

I've noticed this a lot in conservative spaces especially, when they say "I love Trump, but..." -- why the need to say how much you love AI before criticizing it? Who are you trying to convince?

I use LLMs constantly for work and they have genuinely improved my life. But I absolutely despise generated "content". Text, audio, video, images -- for the reasons you describe.

It's ok to have a nuanced and multi-faceted opinion and approach to this and not have to call yourself a raving fanboy.

Why? I’m self employed and I just work in the morning now. Can get so much done by lunch that’s there’s no need to keep going and then I read, cycle, play music, learn…

an aside. I'm visiting my wife's parents and they have a new samsung TV. the remote doesn't even have an input selection button on it anymore. the default state of the tv pushes you to a big complicated home screen covered in ads and always pushing you towards their streaming live TV.

they like most poeople have a cable box plugged in, but every time the tv is switched off, the default behaviour of the tv is to forget what input it was on and goes back to the home screen where you have to use a convoluted set of button presses to get back to a non-samsung, non-app device.

You can switch this off somewhere in the settings, something they would never figure out on their own, so that it re-opens on the last selected input. I did this in the past, but then it seems an OS update wiped out all the settings, including the one that makes their cable remote work with the TV.

there is now no doubt that the TV is made to function primarily as an ad-delivery machine with explicit dark patterns built in for the task. I did them one more favour and reset their ad id and unchecked all the consent boxes on the privacy terms pages

going forward anyone who cares about their choice and privacy should not allow their TV to connect to a network at all and simply use it as a dumb link to their devices of choice, or ideally, find a better company to buy from, if that exists.

As a general rule anything that scroll jacks is quickly removed from my computer or browser tab

The only problem with this scroll wheel is that the clicked mode does not actually guarantee a scroll event per click. There is a disconnect between the mechanical click and the actual event sensor. This is usually a non issue but if you try to use the scroll up/down as a bind in a game (fps jump for instance) it becomes painfully obvious.

Oh and also scroll click isn’t a thing (but there is the middle button to bind)

For normal work I absolutely love the unlocked flywheel scroll and won’t go back

You could seed the map by scraping things like local papers, historical archives, reviews of all kinds, etc. maybe giving them a less prominent appearance compared to user submitted. Getting people using and exploring the tool right away instead of being met with walls of copy and detached forums might be a good move. You could pull the old reddit move and spend a few days adding a tonne of your own stories under different names and/or try and find some others that would be interested in doing the same. Others here would probably tell you to just use LLMs, but I'd avoid that.

As it stands I think you will have a hard time getting people to start filling your database.

The Gaza Testing Ground comes to the USA. Large scale protest and revolt will continue to become a less attractive option for frustrated Americans.

Sounds like you’re just as apathetic as those you despise.

Watching our provinces fall one by one to corrupt/kleptocratic “conservative” governments has certainly done a number on me, but it’s only made me more vocal and more involved in local advocacy.

All that apathy out there is an opportunity to awaken care and turn the tide.

Get off your ass and help.

Your description excited me to click the link. Then I was met with a generic landing page and then clicking map didn’t show me a map. It should just be a map with the stories immediately available as markers. Then clicking through to an about link should take you to that secondary content.

There are lots of anti-technology philosophers that expressed these ideas a lot better than Ted did. I know it's fun and edgy to go all "the unabomber was right", but if you actually read his writings he's also a weird racist/anti-"woke" whack-job. Read Ellul (ted's main influence) instead. I guess he is the reason I even know who that is though.

What ssh features? You can have a hundred devices connected for free and they can all just ssh to each other directly
