Ruby on Rails would agree with you. I've been working in web development for a decade now, across a couple of languages and frameworks, and I've only ever stored UTC. I currently work a lot with time-series data, and I'd rather not know what hack makes it possible to track events that occur during a DST transition.

You somehow squeezed "you're holding it wrong" and "LLMs are actually good now" into the same sentence. I wasn't sure it could be done.

I'm not seeing how DHH's success has any bearing at all. The captain has announced that the ship is sinking. In fact, he left in a lifeboat several months ago. Whether or not he was a good captain has nothing to do with how the remaining passengers should handle his departure.

Yeah, the author's opinion would be way more justified if Rails were an open-source project with thousands of contributors and not just the hard work of DHH himself in total isolation.

My phone is pretty much always in my pocket, both in the sense that I always have it, and in the sense that I rarely use it.

The third sentence: "Neither Reuters, the United Nations, or other western countries were able to independently verify any claims about the incident."

The fifth sentence: "Several UN members requested access to the area for verification, which was not provided".

I have no idea what actually happened, but it sure sounds like the Wikipedia article has some doubts.

You have to track the thing that you expect humans to understand. I still prefer for the code to be that layer, and yet somehow I'm still employed and overseeing a profitable codebase. The software industry is vast and varied.

Essays of this nature should generally be prefixed with "if you happen to work in exactly the same way that I do..."

I think your source is undermining your claim. That Wikipedia article strongly suggests that the whole event was fabricated by Russia.

Wikipedia confirms your explanation and I have no reason to doubt it. Wyoming has the Occidental Hotel, which introduced me to the term, but I never made the connection that its a simple pair of Latin antonyms. I'll correct this in my mental list of "fun facts".

Or maybe it reflects a genuine desire from some subset of regular HN readers? Is it spam when three different articles about the latest Anthropic model make the front page? Or the latest Apple product release?

I was taught somewhere along the way that the term "Orient" for the East comes from the idea that maps were once oriented in that direction.

That's fair. REST isn't much of a standard. MCP can be just as badly designed and documented as REST, but at least there's a standard for authenticating and listing the options. Reading through other top-level comments, this seems to be the theme. MCP usage is mostly driven by ease of connection.

A layer than honestly doesn't do much, as I understand it. What does MCP as a protocol actually solve? Is it more than a bandwagon?

You're making an argument about self-control in a conversation that is explicitly about factors other than self-control.

If The Cuckoo's Egg is one of the best ones, I can skip the rest. It's a fun story, but not particularly well-told in my opinion. Cliff Stoll is a cool guy who does cool things. I guess I just don't appreciate him as an author.
