I’ve renovated many parts of my house myself. I hired out 1 time to a contractor and regretted doing so. Similar to your sentiment, I feel contractors don’t have the same care as I do. I’ve come to the realization that no one else will put in the same care as I would nor care about the small details as I would.

Also similar to you, I feel I could become a licensed electrician and start that as my fallback career.

I see it as well in southern KC. I've been to Alaska in the winter with hopes to the see the Northern Lights. Pretty awesome to see it this far south!

In my scenario, PBS runs on a VM on my Synology. My Synology does automated backups to Backblaze B2 daily. It averages about $5/TB for B2 storage costs for me.I only backup the critical stuff I don't want to lose.

The only downside is that you essentially lock the GPU to 1 VM which there is nothing wrong with doing. At least with LXC, you can share device across multiple containers.

For me, I check my used bookstores for movies that aren't easy to find anymore. I've had good luck so far. Most used movies including Blu-Ray are around $6 USD.

I did this for a while where I ran multiple VMs, some of which had PCIE passthrough for some GPUs on both Windows and Linux. Luckily my motherboard separated out IOMMU groupings to make this work for me. While you _could_ do this, you may run into issues if your IOMMU groups aren't separated enough. The biggest issue I always had was drivers always causing issues with Windows. I eventually blew the entire instance away and just run Windows.

I'd recommend a separate device if you need any access to a GPU. But I do recommend Proxmox as a homelab. I still have it running on a separate 2012 Mac Mini.

From what I remember, some 9600s had the same hardware as a 9800 but had features/processors disabled from the card BIOS. Those could be unlocked with the right BIOS.

I still remember trying to flash my 9600 bios to a 9800 because some were able to that. Unfortunately I didn’t have one of the lucky models that could do so.

Surprisingly it has been smooth. Power modes work as you would expect even across OSes. I always run the graphics mode in hybrid mode to I’m using the integrated chip 90% of the time until something really needs the 3050. In Gnome, you can explicitly launch an application using the dGPU or you can set the environment variables on the application shortcut to always use the dGPU.

I self-host my stuff as well but with a 2012 Mac Mini running Proxmox. I use it as a means to learn sysadmin things.

I get my static IP by using the smallest VPS from vultr with a wireguard tunnel forwarding http/s traffic to a docker container running nginx proxy manager.

For those wanting to learn, I highly recommend joining r/homelab and r/selfhosted. Those communities have a lot in common and you can learn a lot.

Have you tried the installer that contains nvidia drivers already installed?

Thanks for the suggestion but I've already tried that and many other reported possible fixes that didn't work in my case.

I'd LOVE to have a native macOS client for Overwatch. Since I upgraded to a 2019 16" MacBook Pro, my eGPU no longer works in Bootcamp due to the dreaded Error 12 and I can't resolve it. My eGPU works flawlessly in macOS. Plus, I hate using Windows and want to avoid it if at all possible.

I agree. This book is excellent. It helped me understand D3 immensely and gave me the confidence to start making my own charts from my own data.
