While I'm not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice, Florida's law seems to cover any electronic communication of threats like they made. Telling Siri off is quite different from what they did.

Antennas and the peltier/seebeck/TEC should also count.

That’s not really an LLM thing though - if she made the same comment on a Facebook post, she’d face the same consequences.

Enterprise GPUs have a lot longer effective life than these consumer chips (although even the old 3090s are reasonably useful, especially with the recent driver unlock tech). I'd argue that these consumer chips have only now gotten to the memory capacity/processing capacity to make local LLM use actually reasonable.

Eh, I think international production was already a thing for quite a while. I remember so many shows shot in Vancouver, for instance, even pre Netflix. But like every industry, remote work has gotten easier and the forcing-function of COVID showed that you can have some writers in Toronto, a crew in the Czech Republic, and post-production in India - you didn't need them all in LA on union contracts and payscales.

"It worked" for those in the union, for a bit, but the article itself shows 30% declines since 2022. If you're still working under the new, even-more-lavish contracts, I'm sure you're happy. If you're in that 30% now working as a barista or DoorDash driver, did the union work for you?

It's akin to the auto worker's unions, but without the same degree of government backstopping for the industry. The auto workers unions are an anchor around the necks of the auto industry, while government bailout dollars are a lifejacket - it's clear California (and more broadly the US) doesn't see the same need to subsidize the unions in TV and film.

Not keep adding to the taxes, expenses, and red tape? Work to address the outrageous cost of living in CA that indirectly drives expenses for labor? It's a million and one policies that all contribute to how running a labor heavy business in CA is increasingly challenging (bearing in mind that those factors matter less to a software shop or Apple).

As I mentioned elsewhere in the thread, CA's labor-pool's own hostility to the film industry (via strikes) also played a big role. They gave the studios the finger, then are surprised that the studios took their ball and went elsewhere.

Because very often the "peaceful protest" provides cover to rioting/looting/property destruction, and it's a lot easier to say/enforce no assembling on the street at 11pm on a Friday as part of a curfew, than to leave a carveout for assembling on that street for a "peaceful protest".

Another huge nail was the strikes - business will continue with or without those on the picket line, but it just moved to where there weren't strikes.

Yeah, that's definitely an unusual association that most people wouldn't make.

The most popular human-made media is all derivative. Look at a list of the top games and movies for the last 10 years: sequels, spinoffs, and adaptations.

Call of Duty 27, the myriad sports franchises, Halo 8, Fast and Furious 11, a remake of some Disney movie, the latest Marvel-slop...

As I said in my original comment, you've got to have some internal motivation. It's unhealthy to derive all your motivation from likes or views, and people need to recognize that, as Schopenhauer says, "the safest way of not being very miserable is not to expect to be very happy".

Guitar's an easy example because you had a benchmark for "success" before and after social media. But the logic extends to any hobby or skill: before social media, surely people still recognized they weren't in the top 1% of hydroponics, or painting, or bowling. Did that stop them then? Why were they motivated to keep doing it without 50,000 subscribers?
