That I believe. Just, I think the goal is normative, like "don't get in trouble / upset anyone", rather than moral or artistic. So it's the type of goal that shows up in the vacuum of actual goals. It is the type of goal that committees and corporate structures are gravitationally drawn to. Which is what I kinda mean by the problem being structural: the way capitalism makes art naturally regresses to a boring and unimpressive mean with bland and frustrating goals.

This isn't the problem I'm talking about at all. I think there's just basic skill issues everywhere. Maybe there are also issues with this, but it's a separate thing.

I don't think it's a goal. I think it's that the corporate machine which makes media can't really do otherwise for structural reasons.

and the content strangely sucks most of the time. like no one can write, edit, direct, or act anymore. Not always but strangely often.

but why are they bringing it up? Do they think the writer of this article is bought somehow?

what point are you trying to make?

of course it does. do you think people are mad about clearing forests because it's Google doing it? no, Google is just the one that they just heard about this week. If it was someone else they'd be mad about that too, because it's anger based on principles. If Google had bulldozed a bunch of parking lots to make their data centers no one would care.

I really enjoy the writing style here.

edit: I mean this seriously. This kind of thing

> Some of my colleagues believe that this is a nefarious Company, whose only goal is profit, if necessary at our community’s expense. Perhaps there is some truth to this, but I think it is missing the larger point. The fact is that there now exists an automated system that can perform mathematical research — at least the part that involves “solving hard problems” — far better than any human. Now that such a system has been demonstrated, it is clear that results like these were bound to start appearing soon anyway. I do not blame the Company for getting there first. Who got there first is an irrelevant detail, a historical footnote.

is very pleasantly honest and well-thought-out.

I don't think so. Everyone was a lot happier 10-15 years ago when the culture felt less fucked. I think people can't feel happy if they don't feel basically safe, and the world's problems are so incomprehensible, and solutions to them see so impossible to imagine, that there is a background unsafety overlaid on everything, even if one's immediate conditions are pretty good.

Cause our culture is f'ed, lol. Everyone I know is unhappy. It's impossible to be happy when things are this messed up.
