That's crazy; gwenview (The KDE image viewer) has supported webp for quite some time.

x265 supports lossless as well (though I believe it's not part of the H.265 standard). It's what I use for video capture.

Also (if you round correctly) there is no generation loss in the format conversion. You can round-trip between them as many times as you want and you only get the loss of the initial RGB->YCbCr.

jpg: webp, avif, jxl. The first two are adopted because of non-negligible gains, the latter because of features missing in jpg.

mp3: Both AAC and opus have non-negligible gains and both are fairly widely used.

zip[1]: lz4, zstd, and lzma2 dominate at least gzip's implementation of deflate: For any given setting of gzip, there is a setting for at least one of those three that is both faster and smaller.

1: Not a codec; the zip format specifies a dozen methods for encoding. I'm assuming you mean Deflate, which is the most common compression method associated with zip.

I was told about 10 years ago that Lewy body dementia can only be diagnosed post-mortem (my grandfather was diagnosed post-mortem).

Nice to see on the Narraganset; I'm interested in how it does once you pass Beavertail and have to deal with swells.

Most crypto is "majority rules" where the majority is either "majority of the currency" (proof of stake) or "majority of the mining power" (proof of work).

In this case, iFinex has the explicit ability to freeze funds in Tether.

Per the manpage you linked, openbsd's behavior does not match the drand48() interface, since the drand48() interface requires determinism.

If by "much stronger" you mean "less than 10% stronger"

A theoretical "vacuum filled" balloon would only be 16% more lift per unit volume than a helium balloon.

In my experiments, tries easily win out only when comparisons are expensive. Tries struggle against optimized btrees e.g. when you have word-sized integers as the keys.

They do win in simplicity of implementation vs performace. A bog-standard critbit tree with no tricks is almost trivial to implement. Performace wise it stays in the running against anything not heavily optimized.

My wife is also allergic to fish.

She can have bonito and fish sauce, and (most strangely) canned tuna. Any fresh fish makes her violently ill. She had to learn the hard way that many restaurants make their tuna salad with fresh tuna.
