I don’t think it’s official until Netcraft confirms it.

While amusing enough in a schadenfreude way, a lot of this article is dedicated to "people post dumb things on reddit". Just stop reading reddit posts, people.

And yet TVs were sold for that price or more accounting for inflation for decades, and indeed most people bought them.

Fantastic. Giving me memories of MS Bob. Put a talking animal assistant in the corner and you’ve got it. Oh, and you could connect the assistant to an LLM of course.

My first job in 2004 was a pretty casual conversation. My next few through the 00s were basically the same tbh.

That seems too late for both of those, heh. :) I started on LJ in 2001 and quit in 2006. Orkut I think I signed up for in 2004, and only lasted maybe a year there. I seem to remember the Brazilian influence even as early as that.

I just read Replay by Ken Grimwood. Couldn’t put it down and finished in a day. It’s a “character re-lives his life in a time loop” story, which subsequently has been done in many different ways, but this is an early example (was published in 1986 or 87, so e.g. it predates Groundhog Day by several years).

Anyway it was an emotional read. I’m surprised I had never encountered the book before, since “alternate choices affecting how your life turns out” is a concept I’ve always been into. But on the other hand this one would not have been nearly as powerful to me earlier in my life. Me being the same age (or close enough) to the main character at the start is what does it, of course.

So, recommended, especially if you’re in your early-mid 40s.

Someone else mentioned Tigana which is standalone and good. A lot of his other books though take place in a shared world, the first one for that is The Lions of Al-Rassan. (Mostly they don’t have to be read in order but if you do read them in publication order you will catch small references.)

Either of those two would work as a next read.

I’ve read most of GGK’s books but never got to that one.
