I'm personally un-normalizing this. I've left meetings for this shit and will continue to do so. I don't give two shits which service is broken or what bug made it to prod, if you can't talk to me about it without sounding like a tweenage boy, you can fucking fix it yourself.

Grow the fuck up, all of you.

Except as every damn AI app says: AI is prone to making mistakes. If AI deskills you with a non-zero chance of getting the problem wrong, that seems deeply, profoundly bad.

You can type the same long division problem into a calculator 65,000 times and you will get the right answer 65,000 times.

Can AI get even CLOSE to that?

I think you meant to say they spent billions to create this?

In either case the tax prep industry is a pox on our society. But of course this is America, and replacing a perfectly functioning publicly accessible service with a nightmare of private sector bullshit is the most violently American shit ever.

Really all the comments about "white moderates/liberals." The exact sort of people who forgot the Civil Rights movement, Labor Rights movement, and Women's Suffrage, and really every movement by a marginalized group to gain power from the mainstream were packed full of organized political violence.

Non-violent protests have a place. On occasion though, you need to hit the system where it hurts in order for it to take you seriously.

Or at the very least, it would've defaulted to off on the 7-inch model where again, I cannot overemphasize, it is worthless.

Ohhhh I thought Direct File included the mail-in options, not just the online one. Thank you!

I have a probably stupid question: given that the IRS killed Direct File, even if your software can create ready-to-file (or even ones that need some work) tax returns, isn't that moot without a way to like... get the IRS to accept them?

You can turn that off, by the way. Settings -> Multitasking and Gestures -> select Full Screen Apps. Just turns all that off. I honestly don't mind it on my Air but on the Mini is just fucking useless as a feature so I know this lol

Like I said, internal DNS. I have my own DNS server with a small set of records for my own internal sites, mostly automation tools alongside the websites I've built and maintain for small businesses near me. The latter are the easiest to explain, for example, if I built joescoffee.com I wouldn't work in production obviously, I'd work on a copy hosted on my local server at joescoffee.myhouse.com, make my changes and then push that code live. Because Firefox and Chrome (and likely others) roll their own DNS server though, I have to configure that separately, because while my machines all get their DNS from the DHCP leases I've already configured which point all DNS queries to my internal DNS server, DNS over HTTPS bypasses that and contacts public DNS servers directly.

And like, I don't need that. My DNS server is properly maintained and queries those exact same servers itself when you request something like google.com or apple.com. Putting a separate friggin DNS query AND cache in a browser is just more trying to protect people from themselves IMO, and introduces this weird issue where you can't hit an internal site in Firefox, even though you're running `nslookup` on your freaking computer, and it's giving you the proper IP address. And paradoxically putting the IP address in makes the browser find it when the domain you can see correctly resolving in terminal isn't resolving in the browser is fucking obnoxious.

It also would render a pihole useless because Firefox despite the PC's DNS not resolving ad provider's names, WILL resolve them, ensuring an attack vector for malware remains wide open even if you've tried to close it.

And while I'm bitching about this: STOP DEFAULTING EVERY CONNECTION TO HTTPS. Any properly configured website is going to do this anyway, the browser also doing it, again, just annoys the piss out of anyone trying to host stuff locally because why the fuck would I get certificates for servers that aren't even exposed to the damn Internet!?

That too lol

> To be honest, git deferring to the OS is the right thing to do.

Tangentially related: I fucking hate so much that browsers now all have their own DNS resolvers and caches, it's just Another Fucking Thing to debug when you're working especially on locally hosted stuff. This is not a browser's job, it's a task that should fall to the OS.

That's true, that wasn't really my point. My point is that privileged people will dictate these "nightmare scenarios" for why they need to have unchecked power, to prevent? And almost universally it's something that the same privileged people have done to other unprivileged people prior. It's a remarkably consistent cognitive blind-spot.

Like genuinely, with as good of faith as I can muster for people who spread really dogshit ideas, the core concern they seem to have but won't say, with a gun to their heads, is they are scared shitless that minority groups will, somehow, at some point, attain power greater than their own, at which point the minority group will enact the exact same horrific policies that were enacted unto them. It's a core fear of really every society that has at once point had slaves in my experience.

I mean their officers keep getting caught posting racist shit, participating in racist chats, police unions regularly donate to republican politicians, and they murder black people so often that the phrase “driving/walking while black” is common slang for when the aforementioned African Americans get gunned down for every day misdemeanors.

So, every police institution? I’m sure there are exceptions, but there’s enough of a preponderance to safely assume it and the data bears that out.

It will never not blow my mind that wage theft, the act of employers by one way or another fudging compensation to employees, eclipses every other form of larceny combined, and authorities do basically nothing about it.

If you work at a store and you take $100 from the register, you can be detained and jailed. Maybe prosecuted depending where you are.

If you work at a store and short five workers $20 each on their checks, and pocket it, they all have to individually pursue it as a civil matter, which itself costs money and time they probably don't have. It's fucking wild behavior.

I have to disagree though, it's not that crazy. Crime has always been a social construct much as that triggers a certain kind of person to hear, it just is. We decide the bounds of "good" behavior as a society and then determine punishments for those who transgress but at the same time, the law enforcement and justice systems are themselves systems made of people, and therefore inherit their biases. There have always been crooked cops, crooked judges, crooked prosecutors, etc. Like this isn't revolutionary shit I'm talking about, this is a standard plot point in movies going back to before movies had sound.
