We're headed to a sort of inverse Cold War where one side is driving BMWs and the other is terrible Ladas. This time, the USA is the one with the walls up protecting the lousy ICE product.

No electoral method is perfect and there are problems with Instant runoff ranked ballots. Look up "Favourite Betrayal" as a problem where ranking your most favourite incorrectly can accidentally result in your least favourite winning.

Of course just because there are technically flaws, doesn't mean it's not an improvement over the status quo.

Instant Runoff Ranked ballots are particularly well suited for electing a single position like a Mayor or President. Given that it's still a majoritarian system like First Pass the Post, it's a much more questionable system to use for other things like electing a parliament.

Yep. They were concerned about working conditions. For any tech worker that has ever moaned about return to office: Congrats you're a luddite.

Wild note here that Costco stopped selling books ?!?!

I remember going shopping with my Mom at Costco and the book section was like the highlight!

This would be a plausible explanation tho I've been told that cats don't move their tail that way when they're in heat. It doesn't go up but rather sideways.

So maybe it's that but maybe it's something else.

My ancestors were dirt farmers with absolutely nothing despite their health and work ethic that moved here in the 1930s. Do we think Canada is better than then?

We really, really under value the impact of low income, low education immigrants imo.

Eg. The railway that created this country was built by low income Chinese workers that probably didn't even speak English.

Canada doesn't exist without the effort of low income, low education people.

People criticize everything all the time. Why wouldn't people?

I mean should we shut down hacker news? the whole point is discussing.

yea really. The reality is that people who want to move to Japan, learn Japanese, devote their life to this are probably very interested in Japanese culture. There is no risk to Japanese culture from these people.

It's absolutely more likely that the very wealthy that aren't taking as many risks in moving to Japan are not going to care about Japanese culture.

you're on a discussion forum. The point is to discuss things. Why are you being such a scold about what we're allowed to talk about.

Carbon tax was great for me. I made money. Maybe you should have used less carbon.
