Banks stand to lose actual money if they screw up. They do a bit more than checklists.

This was the only way change was ever going to happen: when economics forced it.

LOL "if my competitors are all down too, then it's OK." I guess there's a bit of sense to that.

Insurance, and I presume Medicare in particuar, will generally only pay for the standard of care. They don't care about you as a unique patient, you are instead an average one.

"Paying cash" doesn't mean literally that in this context. Cash, credit card, check... "Paying cash" just means paying directly without involving insurance.

Nice graphic on that page of a bunch of cartoon workers tending to what looks like a Rube Goldberg contraption. It's all just lighthearted fun and games.

Until your VPS provider has its management dashboard breached, allowing an attacker remote console and configuration access to your VMs and everything that enables.

I think the ultimate fallout will be that software "engineers" will finally have to become "engineers" in the real sense, i.e. professionally licensed and personally responsible for the designs they approve and the software they build, whether the actual code is produced by LLMs or humans.

As costs and broader economic impact and perhaps even injuries/deaths related to software breaches continue to grow, there will be growing intolerace for vulnerable software, just as there was intolerance for collapsing bridges and buildings.

And I'd also at some point expect something like a "building code" that applies to software that will be exposed to the public.

For consumers/small orgs, how is the security at a cheap VPS provider going to be any better than at a cheap IaaS provider?

Same with $PATH and other environment variables. You learn this the hard way with cron. I use full pathnames for everything in a cron script because it's too much work to reason about how the cron environment differs from my normal working environment or even a root shell's normal environment.

What pressure? They are going to threaten to delist you? Disappointing their own customers in the process?

A lot. Stocks are always unstable right before an election. Expect a rebound next week.
