In 2025, Hong Wang won the Fields Medal for proving the Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions. Here, OpenAI is claiming to have solved a stronger problem that proves the Kakeya conjecture in all dimensions!

That's so insane to me. This top mathematician (and colleagues) at her pinnacle spent years proving it in three dims and now OAI proves it in every dimension...

It really is the most misanthropic company, isn't it? But strategically is all this fearmongering about SWEs becoming obsolete even the right move for Anthropic?

Say that it is borderline true (it's not, but let's pretend). Then companies can lay off 90 devs for every 100, and buy the remaining 10 devs Claude subscriptions. Isn't it better if they keep all 100 and buy everyone a Claude sub?

So shouldn't Anthropic actually be pushing the narrative that Claude doesn't replace devs but actually makes them vastly better at their jobs and so every company, big and small, should buy every dev the highest tier Claude enterprise subscription?

I have been very critical of Gemini in the past but one thing that I've felt Gemini has always been best at is being the most empathetic model imo. It feels far less cold and emotionless than GPT and Claude.

And which papers do you typically referee? Without that information this claim is meaningless. For example, if you referee free-for-all papers that today are likely written by LLMs as well then sure I can understand that. But if you referee papers from grad students then that's more concerning.

Nope! I would happily go back to using something like the old orkut or facebook where it was mainly about people you knew or were acquainted with. Without all the insidious bad news spam and echo chamber groups probably run by hostile nation state agents.

In fact, I would gladly use something like that and even go out of my way to invite some old high school friends over despite having lost contact with them and being an introvert.

I dearly miss this internet and want it back. But I don't understand the letter. Is he going to build a new social network that is similar to the old Orkut/Facebook?

> There are plenty of published mathematical papers that are just as poorly written as OpenAI's. Nobody says nothing because the authors are big names.

Can you provide some evidence of this claim? "Nobody says nothing" probably works on reddit but I generally expect higher quality discourse on hackernews.

My personal issue with clicking the feedback is that I'm doing free RLHF for Anthropic without getting anything in return.

Just the intro section pretty much sums up perfectly my experience of using Astra (and prior AI models from OAI and Anthropic) for building large and semi-ambitious software. One step forward, two steps back.

The 512GB Ultra is amazing, sure. But who is it for exactly? VC funded big spender founders? In that case why would they need local AI? The ultra rich enthusiast? But there can't be too many of those. So who actually buys these?

Haha I immediately looked for this comment and wondered if the name was inspired by Anathem.

I don't mind no windows at all if they have "digital windows" as substitutes. You're already 40,000ft in the air I think windows aren't really gonna help your claustrophobia. Not like you can open the door and walk out for a bit.

Yes, but open weights means you don't have to use their cloud providers. Someone in the US can host the model on their own infra.

I wonder if Anthropic just has better drafter models for speculative decoding and more efficient prompt caching in their agent harness.
