There's been HTPC frontends that emulated that UI. I think no longer maintained.

These days, probably you could feed a video into Claude Code and have it spit out one which is pretty decent.

I was 26 when I bought one, and agree. I long for a modern STB with the Wii interface and lots of OSS to tinker with. The sounds, the music, the tactile feel of using the WiiMode to navigate was sublime.

The games were cool too.

There's probably a dozen posts at least for getting applications to find their dependencies because of one behavior or another. COM servers, .Net. Trying to get running apps to use an updated PATH or other environment variable.

I hate it. It's beyond me why people would intentionally smudge their laptop display.

I guess if you have a laptop that functions in tablet mode, it makes sense (I don't love tablet modes either).

Someone called out the surface - which is great with the surface pen. I'll agree this is a great use case. I would say this use case is rarer than the prior use cases where you use your meat sticks.

Trying to explain the difference between civil and criminal law never seems to go anywhere on this topic when you're dealing with "sea lions".

That happens occasionally. But it mostly doesn't happen. Mostly, the people who end up with criminal charges are the illegal immigrants. If you dig into the numbers it tells the story of a vanishingly small number of companies (like hundreds per year out of millions) getting scrutiny. The industries which get the scrutiny are the ones where people could end up dead or injured (construction, meat packing, etc.). (According to Gemini - grain of salt)

I believe this number is FTE's and not contractors. That's a whole different story, and I don't think those numbers are public. After a layoff at big tech, you see an influx of contractors. I would not be surprised if it was 50/50 at this point.

I am guessing it is aspirational. I have worked with execs that demand the impossible to get more than they would have otherwise out of teams.

In the rules of haggling, you never accept the first offer. You also need to walk away twice.

This may yet come to pass.

In fairness, they have not earned the benefit of the doubt based on past behavior.
