Having spent a significant time in academia, the problem is you are never judged on what works, but on what idea you can take credit for. Now this is not great for innovation, but it is disasterous for keeping things running.

All the money is in enterprise. Contrary to your experience in software development and other frontier knowledge tasks, 90% of enterprise ai tasks are pretty mundane so much so that GPT 4o was already plenty enough.

The attrocious moderation was just an accelerator. SO was doomed the second it gained enough traction to become a resume padder and consultancy funnel.

Then again, given some even failed to adopt the metric system ...

Also, that same tech industry has shown remarcable competence in working around IPv4's limitations.

From observation there is definitly a difference in attitude regarding automation between the sexes on average. Men seem much more eager to automate chores than woman.

We've had plenty of reasons to "replace American technology" for at least 50 years. Did we? Not one bit.

Maybe naive on my part, but from a security pov I trust my bank's app more than the browser on my pc.

Btw. You'd be surprised how many academics favor the good old publisher system over open access. The exorbitant library fees were always from the general budget. The open access publishing fees get charged to the labs publishing. And yes, often 1 layer down it is all the same government subsidies payed by your tax dollar. But the last layer just sees my dollar vs not my dollar.

I predict GLP-1 infused foods with even more addictive sugar/salt/fat bliss points and other substances. Keep your junkies less aware for longer.

It is January 2015. San Francisco is short of housing in the middle of a tech boom, and most of its land has a 40-foot height limit. You are a resident with a fully paid of mortgage living in the home you love. Nearby, three project teams "landed" with a list of parking lots. Your goal is to keep your neighbourhood 'till 2031 when "tech" will abandon the valley.

The main victims of this attack seem to be not the Russians, but the UK and the EU. If winter hits hard, is the UK still ok after this strike? How's the state of their national reserves?

My gut instinct and observations are that the root is not "ultraprocessed" but the level of what I would call "calory accessibility". They do overlap but are not the same. Take the same steak, eaten raw or artisanally minced into a sausage. Neither would be called "ultraprocessed". However, the "predigestion" process in the latter means our metabolism will have a far easier time extracting the energy from that same meat. Look at the foods obese people gravitate towards: it is not just high sugary salty fats. Yes, it is those, but on top of that those under easy release forms.
