For anyone interested in this topic I strongly recommend: The Great Reversal: How America Gave Up on Free Markets by Thomas Philippon

Serious research with data, but also approachable for noneconomist.

Usually product owners and business are the biggest enemies of engineering minimalism

- [PO] A/B testing says button must be outside table

- [DEV] But that makes the code unreliable and overcomplicates things the framework is not designed to do that, maybe if we include a regular link...

- [PO] BUT AB TESTING, ACQUISITIONS, CRITICAL MISSION, bla bla bla

Too bad I work for a living and paying bills, I don't work so I can "growth". That is just good old self-improvement brainwash to exploit labor

I have hobbies, I have a family, I invest in culture, I enjoy free time, that is actual growth.

Lobby money. Legal bribery at work

free speech is highly overrated, is not even granted in other democracies that are functional

It has also not prevented the US to go into a de-facto oligarchy state if anything the NRA and others have manipulated the "free speech cult" to promote private interest over a public one.

Same as with gun ownership, that sad illusion that owning guns will prevent tyranny is beyond hilarious at this point.

> From a very broad moral perspective, their human rights violations are legion

This judgement coming from the country with the highest incarceration rate, criminalized abortion, caged immigrants, historic systematic racism, legal bribery (lobbying), genrrymandering electoral system, countless invasions with disastrous results in the middle east, africa & asia

Don't get me wrong but outside the US everyone is wondering what is the moral high ground?

Lived for a couple of years in America and opted to return to my country for similar reasons as yours

Industrialized nations mistake comfort and wealth for happiness

Ultimately in my experience titles mean nothing, right now officially I'm just "software engineer", you can be a CTO in a 2 man company, which is cool I guess but it really doesn't mean much.

What I mean with upward trend is that I can negotiate conditions like benefits (remote, insurance etc... ) and a better salary, etc..

Actually I think you are reading way to much into it, seems to me she is neither condemning nor praising, the article conclusion does mention there is an upside to this raise in travel: "they also mean more cross-cultural exposure, more investment, more global connection, more democratization of travel, and perhaps more awe and wonder. Even overtourism has its upsides."

I disagree with the article as well. Whenever I stumble upon really good engineers they are for the most part hyper specialized in what they do.

I would like to add that after I stopped saying yes to everything, my career took a upward trend. It wasn't until I said: you know what I'm python-django specifically django developer, and won't do anything else, that I started getting progressively better jobs in the area I'm actually an expert on.

Then there is the business cut cost part of it, which annoys the hell out of me. Most managers will (conveniently) tell you should be open to learning new things, because "personal growth"... the reality of the situation is that you will end up over working yourself to death covering responsibilities that should be for a new team mate.

Once we tried to had a conversation about gun control, health care, and social security with an American ex-colleague.

He went from being this nice composed man, to be a GunNutz-take the government out of my health care jihadist in just seconds. It was bizarre, no one really argued with him anymore since he was so visibly upset. That is some serious indoctrination that's going down there, that is for sure.
