I agree totally agree. This is the same org that told us Bush was right about WMDs, whose reporters didn't know what a CDO was when the financial collapse happened, and spent three years unable to believe Trump could win the election. This is why nytimes.com is pointing to 0.0.0.0 in my hosts file.

Where are the numbers? What is the speed up?

The effort that goes into these posts without addressing the basics always boggles my mind.

It's a nice feel good story that gets funding. It's not replacing teachers, mentors and schools anytime soon.

People not just children need supervision and guidance when it comes to information going into their heads. It is why whichever culture you pick across the globe, "education" involves having a "teacher" figure around. There is no system anywhere where you can just drop of the kid at the library and magic happens.

Take this community, you will find the ones that are good at what they do aren't just good, because of access to information, but because of the kind of mentors that have been around them or they have run into in life.

That's really the missing piece in today's internet. Despite all this information access it's still hit or miss that a kid or an adult will find the right mentor.

For a family of 5 that sounds like a pretty good deal.

True. Good to remember the American Internet is not the Internet. It's fascinating how this debate plays out in other countries with a certain class of citizenry that don't have the capacity to think for themselves. Even if the ISP landscape is hyper competitive people who spend their time on American tech sites, actually believe they are under threat. They express it via the media, social media etc. The Americans anti net neutrality activists totally ignorant of local conditions show up in full support. It's like watching cascading exploding ignorance in real time.

Stone age tools as Chomsky calls them. The problem with simple to use tools, is the simplicity masks two key facts from the user - whether aptitude for the tool exists & amount of effort and time to mastery.

You should talk to a experienced shrink or a psychologist about what the best outcomes for her might be. Sounds like she is dealing with what they would call traumatic attachment. Best outcomes for the individual won't be intuitive in such cases. Also there will be a psychological cost to you for opposing what your family might think is right. It's always good to be understand how to handle it before taking any stand.

This is where an experienced counsellor can make a huge difference. They usually have seen many such cases and have a sense of possible positive outcomes.

Public perception has nothing to do with it. The Russians and Chinese don't care about public perception. Why aren't all their rockets using nuclear propulsion? This is very expensive research. Nuclear propulsion is definitely going to be utilized it just isn't a budget priority right now.

Complete BS. This is what happens when you have top class PR at your disposal to define the narrative.

Microsoft is responsible for their shit software getting exploited first and foremost. Seriously fine Microsoft and by day after tomorrow that 3500 security engineer number will jump to something realistic.

Instead what will happen is more tightening of the walled garden, overcharging of support/security contracts and propping up of another billionaire or two. I can hear the whisky glasses clinking.

Corporations do not get to set the agenda and the narrative. When they are allowed to, the results are very predictable - in this case Microsoft will make more than they loose. Who here disagrees that is going to happen? And who here believes that is right?

The answer is simple whether its Microsoft today or Facebook and Google tomorrow win-win should not be an option when such things happen.
