A primary reason for the Catholic Church changing the calendar was to bring the date of Easter back into conformance with the decree of the Council of Nicaea on the topic. There was a controversy in the early Church on this, there were even miracles worked concerning the correct date -- see Dom Gueranger's "Liturgical Year" for some of the accounts.

There is a time to buy, a time to sell, stocks and gold go through clear cycles where one outperforms the other, currently stocks have been outperformed by gold for 25 years.

My kids bought silver recently and are up 17% in about 2 months.

45 year cup and handle patterns playing out in gold and silver, both going much higher -- governments cannot borrow their way out of debt, current paper currencies going to zero value over time -- Dow down over 70% measured in gold over last 25 years -- etc. etc.

The company I work at originally did TDM test eqpt, there was a mad scramble around 2008/2009 to switch over to Ethernet, which is what the US telcos use now for customer call traffic.

yes DLL hell is the issue with dynamic linking -- how many versions of given libraries are required for the various apps you want to install? -- and then you want to upgrade something and it requires yet another version of some library -- there is really no perfect solution to all this

Ah, APL. I remember a network synthesis EE course in the 70s where we had an assignment to implement matrix exponentiation. I had just finished a matrix algebra class and learned APL in the process, so my implementation was 2 lines of APL. Those where the days...

There was once work on metalized optical paper tape of very high density for archival purposes -- what happened to that?

Britannica: "The Council of Nicaea in 325 decreed that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox (March 21). Easter, therefore, can fall on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25."

The correct date for Easter was a huge deal in the early Church. The Pope brought Easter back into conformity with Nicaea by reforming the calendar -- astronomical knowledge had improved a lot over the centuries.

There is a classic book about the effects of sugar named "Sugar Blues" for the interested. I have a bad reaction to sugar so have to avoid certain foods -- e.g. bananas are a no-no for me.

I recall many years ago hearing that a mathematician had invented something and was very happy about the fact that it had absolutely no practical use. I may remember the details incorrectly but I believe it was one-way functions -- which are used all over the place now in computer security. Someone please correct me if I have the details wrong here.
