Funnily enough, I have scripts that archive my fandom's entire Tumblr, Ao3, and Fanfiction.net output. (The Tumblr one is an attempt, since you can't archive a fandom so much as the popular tags.)

There wasn't any bump in Tumblr creation timed to when Ao3 went down, and today the new season premiered, which triggers a huge bump on its own.

Nazi hosting providers probably wouldn't be too cool with the bulk of Ao3's participants or content.

> There aren't that many scenarios which make a restoration time of weeks inevitable

IIRC everyone involved in restoring this is a volunteer doing this in a few free minutes here and there. I don't think they have any paid IT staff. In the first three months of 2026, the entire org (which is more than just Ao3) spent around $50K total for all costs, most of which is colocation/hardware expenses.

Point is that you can't extrapolate recovery times from the commercial sector to Ao3 recovery times.

Also it's been used for centuries by writers who are considered at the top of the craft. It's not a neologism. It dates back to the 14th century. Authors who use "they" as a gender neutral singular pronoun include: Shakespeare, Chaucer, Austen, Dickens, etc.

In fact, it was 18th century schoolteachers who invented the "rule" that it wasn't acceptable usage.

These same losers also invented the "rules" that you can't end a sentence with a preposition, you can't split an infinitive, and you can't start a sentence with a conjunction.

These are all fake rules that were just poorly obfuscated attempts to make English follow Latin grammar (bc Latin was allegedly a "perfect" language)

I did. I couldn't care less if people know I write fanfiction. I talk about it IRL with people, completely without shame. [email protected]

it doesn't, but you're the one who implied that being unscientific invalidates scholarship

I think you're conflating villainy with evil. Eboshi abandons her village for cash in the climax of the film. SHe's told the village is in trouble and says "let them deal with it, mama's gotta make that cheddar"

Jigo lays a trap that sacrifices hundreds of his own men in order to kill a god.

I'd put both of them in the villain category. Before the battle, I wouldn't put either of them in that category, but the climax really makes them out to be awful people. Eboshi in particular hides behind smiles and buying up the contracts of prostitutes (to make them her slaves) and helping lepers until the climax when she completely abandons them, throwing them to the wolves in service of money.

I watched a few key tags around functional programming and JS, but someone would always answer first, so I eventually moved on because I wasn't needed. I for a time ended up just responding to random Tweets from African students posting about their programming achievements with tips for structuring code they posted better and stuff like that. It led to some fun conversations.

now I have kids, so they get my teaching attention instead. And I don't touch Twitter.

> I would say accidentally deleting a file

It goes to your trash can/recycle bin for a while. That's literally what it's for: to guard against accidental deletes. Very few people accidentally delete files from their computer's drive anymore. The only time people do this in 2026 is accidentally formatting an SD card that had their camera's pictures on it or something.

We all need to go back to numbered versioning. I've been on macOS and have to check every time I need to know what OS I'm running. High Sierra, Monrovia, Yosemite, who the fuck knows I've spent two days in California my entire life. I also shouldn't need to know what minor version I'm on to discuss my OS's capabilities. 26.2 is what I'm on now.

no one is going to hack your laptop that sits behind your router at home checking emails and browsing the web

I get that this is hn and we're paranoid about everything, but come on, what CVE is a threat to joe sixpack here where he should drop $2K on a new machine to protect against it?

i'm so tired of seeing this discouraging crap - "that's not a backup, LOSER"

file sync is backup against the things most people have to deal with (hardware breaking, theft, house fire, residential lightning strike)
