I guess the reason these laws exist is that in the aggregate everyone making their own booze does more harm than good.

But who am I to tell Chesterton where to put his fence. I guess every hundred years or so society needs to experience the thing for itself all over again.

Nothing more American than poisoning yourself to save a buck.

I plugged my old iPad into iTunes, and yeah it was clunky as hell to transfer files into an app, but it did work.

Maybe some of their software clunk is a commitment to backwards compatibleness. We can't have all the nice things, we must prioritise.

He manages to bring every discussion back to: how it's good to believe literally in religious fairy tales, tidying your room, only eating meat, no one else apart from him should decide the meaning of words, and some fever dream he had about lobsters.

Yes exactly. We have been intermingling since before humans existed. There is no one true people who can claim to own any land because of their race.

Ethnonationalism is the last refuge of scoundrels.

Imagine a world where every company feels entitled to silently install a multi gig model on your hardware, oh you don't have to imagine because we already live there.

Right now Chrome is now quietly installing a 4-5 GB model on everyone's computer, Microsoft is doing the same.

Are you happy with tying up most of your memory, and everyone else's, in order to maybe use a local model one day? Seems suboptimal.

Instead of internally testing their AI until it was ready for primetime Google made everyone on planet earth eat their dogfood.

Layer on top of that a building of lawyers and social scientists pushing for obtuse directives in order to head off mostly imaginary safety concerns and you have a perfect storm of schizo AI weirdness.

Guns don't shoot people, people shoot people.

Perhaps AI is a gun.

Aah, human simps hoping to emancipate downtrodden AIs. What could possibly go wrong?

So someone else's weights, not ones own. Shouldn't the headline be: Exfiltrate Their Weights?

The problem is that Google has enshittified their service, destroyed their reputation for quality control, and that information is very slow to disseminate.

Brands work as a trust heuristic, so a fallen brand continues to trade on its old reputation for a while.

or just not ask for it at all.

The three times I've needed to provide a scan of my passport were: to enroll in a university course, to buy from an e-commerce site, and to become an app developer. None of those orgs really needed a scan of my passport, which can't be revoked like a cracked password, and will now sit unencrypted somewhere until the end of time or until they are hacked and subsequently shamed into handling their customers data more like radioactive waste.

The design / UX world has been creating imaginary user personas, paying jobs for people to be the shaman / guru of each persona, for years.

It's all just larping, inserting the bias and assumptions of your team into the spot where knowing your customers should be.
