Lots of NCR's ATMs switched from OS/2 to Windows 2000 workstation at the beginning of the 2000's in western europe. Probably the same anywhere else. Had a lot of fun with token ring networks with the strange square connector plugs.

Oh, and I forgot another great issue that made a lot of companies developping their own PC/windows-based solutions : PANELS. The panel solutions provided by the main players were quite horrific : proprietary, slow, buggy, limited, very expensive, bad at commissioning (speed, firmware/software compatibility issues). Siemens Simatic HMI from the '2000 decade was especially lagging and a few generation behind those from, for example, Allen-Bradley with the PanelView +/CE range, based on... Windows CE.

There are lot of windows based solutions since more than 20 years ago for two main reasons : recipe management system, and logging. A basic SCADA of sort. PLCs systems of that era could either not manage it (TSX, S5,S7-100/200), or it would be additionnal very expensive, complex and typically OPC-based solutions (I'm shivering).

Some of theses solutions are built upon common PLCs but some are built as standalone solutions when I/O are simple enough (modbus mainly, RS232/422/485, ethernet/IP, controlnet, ...). Seen lot of them in breeding nutrition management systems, in-house developped processes, ...

It should work with Siemens MPI/PPI interfaces, but I predict issues with ex-Telemecanique (now Schneider Electric) unitelway realtime DOS driver which is extremely picky.

I had it listed at this price for a few months, simeone from their company purchased it and rode 2 hours and half to come get it. Couldn't and had no reason to up the price at this stage. Indeed, this was a very good deal for them.

Not DOS, but I sold a '99 HP computer running win98 last month, to replace an identical failed system. It was used to control a 50 meters long custom industrial paint booth line for special equipments (like 57" rims). Luckily, their HDD was OK. Urged them to make a few sector-to-sector copies of it on a few spare HDD. This $100 sell surely has prevented this business from massive bills or even going bankrupt in the meantime from production loss.

How much time did it take since you completely cut off caffeine for the anxiety to settle down ?

"which would have otherwise been expensive for the budget of two high school students"

High school students !? You are more capable than most of adults from my country, even "of the trade" if I might say.

Well you can still run Windows 11 rev 25H2 on a Intel/AMD 2016 hardware through easily forced upgrade or install (nocpu/notpm), did it this afternoon on an entry level Lenovo laptop i5-6200u based, while you can only upgrade up to MacOS Monterey (12.x) on a late 2016 macbook pro. So rather ~5 years than 10. But thoses past "performances" might not reflect futures ones, yep.

Thought it would be about feds breaking in because you built a nuclear reactor in your basement while exposing your neighbors to some radiation.

Except almost nobody buys them, even last years for 10 bucks each. That's almost useless ECC Reg memory for HPE Gen 8 servers and workstations (from before late 2015 / start of 2016 with the introduction of the Gen9 using DDR4).

ECC unbuffered DIMMs (9 memory chips per side, no reg buffer/controller) is less available, quite widely used on level entry systems and thus costs a lot more even second hand.

Yep. Don't expect to sell those sticks on ebay at great price. Those new chips will be likely soldered to appliances like low end routers/APs, set top boxes, various adapters, low end systems, PLCs, IPBX, NVRs and various embedded devices.

I sold 7,2 Kg of DDR1/2/3 sticks two month ago, for gold recovery. As well as expansion cards, hdd PCBs and a few other things. Got about $600 from this.
