I've had my phone number for more than 20 years and I routinely get 2 or 3 a day.

You're lucky...

This is naive.

You are arrested for a crime you didn't commit. The prosecution charges you with a serious crime with punishment of years in prison. Your lawyer can't guarantee you'll be found not guilty and you'll be in jail for a least a year until the trial because you can't make bail. The DA then offers a plea bargain to a lessor crime with several months in prison.

Lots of innocent people would, and do, plead guilty to the lessor crime.

A lot of them don't use those scanners ... they get the clerk to scan all their tickets instead.

I've walked out of the store and left my stuff on the counter when I realized the person ahead of me had about 50 tickets to scan. Multiple times. I'm not waiting for 10+ minutes for them to scan all their tickets and then buy $100 more tickets.

But the need for them has gone down? Should we hire 10x as many? 40x?

Safety advocates (I.e. fire experts) are on board with changing the Ontario building code to no longer require multiple stair wells in new structures below a certain number of floors because of the lowered risk factors. Just need policies to catch up.

I’m only upset that we have an over abundance of fire fighters now and are looking for ways to keep them busy. Retraining as a combination of EMT and Fire for instance.

Everything related to fires got better: more and better smoke and CO detectors, interior sprinklers, regulations around flammable clothes, bedding and mattresses, reduced smoking rates, increased awareness, faster response times, closure of firetrap rooming houses (fwiw: closing rooming houses contributes to the homelessness problem), better apartment inspections ...

We don't really need multiple exits in case of fire because fires are occurring less often and people are getting plenty of warning.

We're facing the issue in Ontario where firefighters are bored out of their minds and are being used as first responders for anything and everything. They show up to random fender benders.

No. He was just in pain and had no other way out.

Canada has medical assistance in dying now that lets people avoid this.

My paternal grandfather starved himself death because of health issues. My paternal grandmother died in agony from colorectal cancer. My maternal grandfather faded away and died not recognizing most of his children. My maternal grandmother was trapped in a noisy ICU where she couldn't sleep until her heart finally failed.

We can all come up with shitty anecdotes.

Having managed programmers for more than 30 years, there are a LOT of programmers who just want to code. There are also a lot of programmers who went into programming because "it was a good, well paying job".

Doesn't really take much away from the article but a significant percentage of the developers who are unemployed are not losing their passion, they are worried about what job they will get to pay the bills.

My father worked for the railroad as a blacksmith but he apprenticed to an old blacksmith who was a farrier before. There are still farriers to this day.

Some of us will need to move on to other things but there will probably still be a lot of farrier type jobs around.

Check out his comments in this thread, this guy appears to be a corporate apologist.

> That’s what you think, though, you didn’t design the printer. I assume you don’t have a background in color theory or chemistry or whatever else you need to produce ink.

Do you?

Monotone printers are a thing and have been since the 60's.
