Could I use this app to hire a nurse and get a diagnosis from home? If we can start getting even meagre medical treatment to skip insurance / other middle men, I could see this having a great impact on healthcare prices, especially since AI is such a good information extractor, which is 90% of the role doctors play anyway.

This is not an inherent truth to capitalism. It might somewhat be the case in America right now, but that’s because we have chosen certain tax brackets and other choices that allows for it.

I was recently working on a project where I had to come up with a novel solution to a problem the company was facing. The problem has been solved before, but in suboptimal ways that wouldn’t work for this specific company. I came up with a pretty interesting solution, one that combines different statistical methods, and was a little more complicated, but gave better results.

I asked Claude what it thought about the technique. It hated it. It loathed the idea that I was not sticking with traditional methods that were pointed to in papers and pre-existing open source packages. Even after talking through the idea and how it was better and showing it the results, it was weirdly hesitant to admit it was a valid method, simply because it seemed nervous that the idea was novel.

I don’t have a real moral to the story, I just thought I would add my anecdote here.

Check out the federal funds rate over the last 5 years: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/fedfunds

Vs the 30 year bond yield: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/DGS30

That’s the news. The fed is desperately trying to get interest rates lower, but the free market isn’t buying it. The treasury is also pulling out some very desperate moves to control this, like selling euro for JPY without even telling the EU, we will see how it works out.

I like to use the analogy that the human brain (when it comes to intelligence) is like a computer. We have storage, which is just long-term memory. We have RAM, which is your ability to keep track of a mental model of something you’re actively working on, and then there’s the CPU, which is the ability to make logical leaps and connections on that mental model (or maybe storage).

I’ve met different people throughout my career whose intelligence came in 1 specific area. For instance, my friend is extremely good at trivia, he clearly has a lot of storage and can access it easily. I think I’ve only met one person who was excellent in all three areas of intelligence.

Obviously this is a simplification, but it’s how I like to illustrate my ideas on intelligence at parties and first dates.

It's because they are so busy. Yeah, costco is the one store I go to that people seem to have 0 spatial awareness. Every time I go, someone will just stop moving in the middle of the aisle, creating backups, without any shame. But I bet if your other local grocery stores were as busy as costco, they would have the same issues.

If anthropic‘s reliability becomes a meme, they risk brand death like Microsoft. Go to hand it to them though, they’re really living that “AI writes all of our code and it should write your code too” life.

Yes - I’ve seen the pricing algorithms at several large insurers. Massive surcharges for young people 16-25, rates level out 30-55, and then slowly start to go back up, but it’s a slow increase compared to the young ones.

I misread the title as “AdaBoost” and got excited for some old school ML discussions on HN. My disappointment is immeasurable.

Kagi sure does keep me on my toes. I love it. I won't be using this at all, but I appreciate it exists. If you opened one on the East Coast I could see myself visiting.

To all those calling this bizarre - I agree, BUT I also think Kagi is in the perfect position to do weird stuff like this. Their products are high impact but, to be blunt, easy to ditch. If the company gets too weird for me I can just effortlessly use a different search engine / browser. So, I encourage them to try weird stuff while they are small and have a small footprint. I love the idea that a company is doing stuff like this.

Wherever the crowd sourcing says.

I use Orion as my daily driver, mostly because of its Kagi integration.

I have a personal theory that this technology is inevitable, and will become widely used. As the technology gets better, and these cameras get more discrete, anyone not wearing these glasses is at a disadvantage.

I would love to record everything I see (assuming perfect solutions around video security and storage, another topic), not because I’m a creep and want to watch the videos, but because it acts as a personal dash cam.

My wife and I recently decided to do IVF. The doctor specifically told us that we needed to order the medicine (menopur, Gonal F, etc) from an American pharmacy. That alone made me suspicious, so I looked at foreign options. Altogether, the medication required would have cost us about $5000 from American pharmacies. We found out that we can just buy the exact same stuff from a German pharmacy for about $1000. So yes, Americans get wrecked by drug prices.

Makes sense. Being in organized crime must be fucking fascinating. One day, you’re haggling on the price of black market eggs. Next day, you’re arranging the smuggling of sand from Latin America to Australia.
