We can also find the f minimizing the integral of f^2 by considering the Lagrangian: integral f(x)^2 - lambda f(x) + lambda - mu x f(x) + mu dx, then solving pointwise for f(x) to get f(x) = (lambda + mu x) / 2, then using the constraints to get lambda and mu.

The parent comment is just saying that a poorly-run vaccination programme results in more deaths than a successful one, everything else being equal. Hope that helps.

This phase I/II study's primary objective was to learn about the safety of the vaccine, and about whether it causes an immune response. I'm no expert, but I expect the phase III trials in the US and India will include a broader population.

Penalizing emissions directly through gasoline and emissions-based road taxes would be a vastly cheaper and simpler way of reaching the same objective. What can be done to make this more politically palatable?

I work in an open plan office and find potentially relevant discussions to be the most distracting, so I'm glad that most of these now take place asynchronously over instant messaging. If you've even managed to focus in an airport lounge, or a coffee shop then you know your brain can deal with sounds which are completely irrelevant. Similarly, if it just so happens that people are talking about something directly relevant to your problem, you can join in. The potentially relevant discussions are the most insidious though, because the work of deciding whether they are relevant is sufficient to prevent deep focus.
